MSFF is looking for its Blantyre Cervical Cancer Project Office: Nurse – Maternity Cover

Main purpose of the position

Providing nursing care, treatment and follow-up of patients, according to doctors’ prescriptions, protocols applied in service and universal hygiene standards or precautions, to ensure the quality and continuity of care for the targeted population.

Job Summary

Hygiene and Safety Standards

  • Know, promote, implement, and follow up on universal hygiene standards/precautions, biohazard prevention, infection control, security rules, and other protocols and procedures in medical premises.
  • Ensure high standards of hygiene in the working environment and respect medical secrets and confidentiality at all times.

Patient Care and Treatment

  • Organize and carry out care and treatments as per medical prescriptions, assist during consultations and medical procedures.
  • Participate in patient health education (and family if necessary).
  • Identify mental health disorders and refer patients to the supportive team for necessary treatment.
  • Ensure patients are properly received, installed, and assisted, especially those lacking autonomy regarding feeding, personal hygiene, movements, and comfort.
  • Ensure triage of patients in waiting areas, wards, or during emergencies, detect priority acute/emergency cases, carry out first aid care, and refer them to the doctor when necessary.

Material Management

  • Send material for sterilization and retrieve it from sterilization.
  • Perform admission, surveillance, and follow-up of patients, including assessing their state of health and
  • identifying any emergency situations or deterioration.

Administrative Procedures

  • Carry out and supervise administrative procedures and documents (e.g., filling in patient files, forms, consumptions, statistics, registers, health files, etc.).
  • Ensure appropriate written or oral handover and report problematic situations and cases to supervisors.
  • Participate in data collection and keep doctors/supervisors informed. Pharmacy and Equipment Control
  • Participate in department-related pharmacy and medical equipment control and maintenance (quality, functioning, storage conditions, follow-up of expired drugs inventories, stock takes of medicines and materials at every team changeover).
  • Ensure no material is taken out of nursing area/wards without prior authorization.
  • Perform cleaning and minor maintenance for biomedical equipment used, following user manuals and protocols, and alert supervisor in case of malfunctioning.

Specific Accountabilities

  • Check the emergency box daily.
  • Assist and help the doctor by translating when needed.
  • Accurately register and document biopsy samples.
  • Attend departmental and hospital meetings.
  • Perform PHQ-4 for all initial patients to identify mental health disorders and refer to counseling if needed.
  • Attend and prepare the MDT list with the supervisor.
  • Attend bi-weekly pharmacy and logistic inventory.
  • Ensure the bio-medical equipment is functioning well and properly followed up.
  • Enter accurate patient information into the EMR (Electronic Medical Record).
  • Properly document external lab investigations and collect results on time.
  • Ensure patients follow the proper pathway.
  • Administer medication according to the doctor’s prescription.
  • Perform point-of-care (POC) tests for patients according to their visit.
  • Make reminder calls for initial patients.
  • Assist the doctor with LEEP and other procedures.

Requirements

Education : At least a Diploma/Degree in Nursing

Experience:  Desirable 2 years of previous experience in MSF or in other NGO’s, Demonstrable experience in supervising and training others in a team setting

Languages : English and Chichewa essential
