1. Background 

The Co-operative Development Foundation of Canada (CDF Canada) is a non-profit organization that supports co-operative businesses and financial institutions to reduce poverty and improve livelihoods worldwide. It works to strengthen co-operatives in developing countries by providing technical assistance, funding, and training programs to empower communities through sustainable economic development.

CDF Canada is implementing the Integrating Aquaculture-Agriculture to Combat Food Insecurity in Malawi (IAAM) Project, aimed at increasing the productivity and income of, and access to markets by small-scale food producers, especially women, engaged in the integrated aquaculture-agriculture system (IAAS) comprising of fish, crops, livestock, and agroforestry sub-systems to combat food insecurity in eight districts across Malawi.

To support effective project monitoring, evaluation, accountability, and learning processes, CDF Canada seeks to recruit a motivated and detail-oriented Monitoring and Evaluation Intern. The intern will support data collection, data management, reporting, and documentation of project achievements and results.

2. Purpose of the Internship 

The purpose of this internship is to strengthen the Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) systems of the IAAM Project while providing practical learning and professional development opportunities to a young professional aspiring to build a career in Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) within the development and humanitarian sector.

3. Scope of Work and Key Responsibilities 

Under the direct supervision of the Monitoring and Evaluation Specialist, the intern will support the implementation of the following activities:

A. Monitoring and Data Collection

  • Support routine data collection activities in accordance with the IAAM Project M&E framework.
  • Assist in the administration of surveys and questionnaires.
  • Support the programming and development of data collection tools and questionnaires.
  • Participate in field monitoring visits, where applicable.
  • Conduct data entry, data cleaning, and validation exercises.

B. Data Management and Analysis 

  • Support the maintenance and updating of M&E databases and tracking tools.
  • Assist in conducting basic quantitative and qualitative data analysis.
  • Support the updating of output indicator tracking tables and related monitoring tools.

C. Reporting and Documentation

  • Contribute to the preparation of monthly, quarterly, annual and donor reports.
  • Assist in the filing and organization of project reports and supporting documentation.
  • Support the preparation and coordination of M&E-related meetings and review sessions.

4. Expected Deliverables 

  • Accurate and timely entry of project data into M&E systems.
  • Updated indicator tracking tables and monitoring tools.
  • Properly filed and organized project reports and documentation.
  • Timely support provided for reporting and project review processes.

5. Required Qualifications and Competencies 

A. Education 

  • Recent graduate in Statistics, Computer Science, Economics, Development Studies, Social Sciences, or a related field.  

B. Skills and Experience 

  • Basic understanding of monitoring and evaluation principles and concepts.
  • Familiarity with data collection tools (e.g. ODK Collect and Kobo) and methodologies, including surveys and questionnaires.
  • Basic skills in data analysis using Microsoft Excel and/or statistical software such as SPSS or STATA.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Strong attention to detail and good organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and meet deadlines effectively.

C. Other Competencies 

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Willingness to learn and work collaboratively within a team environment.
  • Demonstrated interest in development programming, accountability, and results-based management.

6. Supervision and Support 

The intern will work under the direct supervision of the Monitoring and Evaluation Specialist and will receive continuous mentorship, on-the-job training, technical guidance, and regular performance feedback throughout the internship period.

7. Working Conditions 

  • This is a learning-oriented internship position designed to provide practical professional experience.
  • Field travel may be required depending on project activities and operational needs.
