INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITY

The Global Health Informatics Institute (GHII) is a non-profit organization working at the intersection of science, engineering, and global health to address problems of global health importance through the development of local solutions and capacity (https://www.ghii.org). We are recruiting for our second cohort of product development interns.

Position Overview:

We are seeking two highly motivated and proactive Product Development Interns to join our service learning program with the product development team. The ideal candidate must be passionate about creating practical and sustainable technology solutions, possessing both technical and communication skills. You will work closely with the engineering and product teams to design, prototype, and refine hardware and software components for ongoing and new projects. Operating on a hands-on service-learning model, this intake is a structured educational residency rather than a traditional employment role.

Key Tasks:

  • Work under the supervision of the Product Development Manager to coordinate and execute product development activities within allocated budgets and timelines.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to identify user and market needs and ensure that final products meet customer requirements.
  • Assist the Product Development Manager in preparing product design documents, specifications, and progress reports.
  • Review and recommend improvements to current product development
    processes to enhance efficiency and product quality.
  • Communicate innovative ideas, design concepts, and findings through
    presentations and technical documentation.
  • Analyze and troubleshoot product issues in a timely and systematic manner.
  • Contribute to product development process improvements .
  • Assist in circuit design, analysis, and testing for electronic products.
  • Perform soldering, PCB assembly, and troubleshooting of electronic circuits.
  • Support firmware development, programming, and prototyping for embedded systems (e.g., PIC32, Arduino, or similar platforms).
  • Contribute to Computer-Aided Design (CAD) and Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAM) tasks, including mechanical component design and fabrication using tools such as SolidWorks, AutoCAD, or Fusion 360.
  • Participate in reverse engineering to improve or adapt existing technologies.
  • Conduct research to identify and develop new solutions addressing global health challenges.
  • Ensure compliance with safety standards and maintain workplace organization through regular 5S practices.

Education/Qualifications

Recently graduated or pending graduation with a degree in Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related Engineering field.

Skills

  • Basic skills in circuit designing, soldering, and prototyping (e.g. academic or
    personal projects
  • Familiarity with CAD/CAM tools (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Fusion 360).
    Candidates with hands-on experience using CNC machines or 3D printers will have an added advantage.
  • Basic knowledge of programming and embedded systems development (e.g.
    C/C++, Python, Arduino, or similar platforms).
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  • A proactive and entrepreneurial mindset with ability to identify opportunities,
    take initiative, and contribute innovative ideas.

Successful applicants would be expected to start on Monday, 22nd June 2026.
The internship lasts for three months.
The base of operations is Area 3, Lilongwe.
Interviews will take place in Lilongwe. Applicants invited for interviews will be reimbursed for their transportation costs to and from Lilongwe.
