Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is a non-profit, independent international humanitarian organization committed to delivering medical aid to populations facing crises, with a steadfast commitment to impartiality and without regard to race, religion, creed, or political affiliation. In Malawi, MSF collaborates closely with the Ministry of Health and the local community, particularly in the Cervical Cancer project in the Blantyre district, as well as the CBO Project in Zalewa and Dedza District. The CBO Project supports Sex Workers’ Community-Based Organizations (CBOs), facilitating access to essential medical services in sex-work hotspots of Dedza and Zalewa.

MSFF is looking for its CBO Project Office: Driver – 1 POSITION

Main purpose of the position

Performing the tasks of transporting authorized goods and passengers in an MSF vehicle, ensuring its technical and safety conditions, maintaining a professional relationship with the Sex-worker CBOs and beneficiaries of the services offered by the organisation, and respecting the country’s traffic rules and MSF security rules, to provide a safe, smooth, and efficient service.

Job Summary  

  • Checking daily, the technical conditions of the assigned vehicle (state of the tires, oil, fuel, brakes, radio equipment, spare parts, etc.)., performing weekly check according to the MSF Logbook, refilling it when necessary, and keeping it clean to ensure it can be driven in perfect conditions.
  • Ensuring the security of passengers in the vehicle, driving carefully, observing speed limits and traffic rules in the country as well as MSF security rules, to avoid car accidents.
  • Ensuring that all passengers are authorized to use an MSF vehicle and ensuring that non-MSF personnel sign disclaimers of responsibility before using MSF vehicle.
  • Ensuring correct loading and unloading of the vehicle, submitting the documents to the receiver of the goods, checking the status of delivered goods, returning the duly completed documents to Logistics and ensuring that the goods have the necessary documents.
  • Ensuring that all vehicle documents and the Driver’s driving license are valid and in the vehicle.
  • Informing the line manager of any incident involving the transportation of passengers and/or goods.
  • Knowing and respecting the security rules related to vehicle movements, specifically those related to customs, checkpoints, and roadblocks. Ensuring all passengers know and respect the security rules.

Specific Accountabilities

  • Maintain respectful professional relationships with Sex-worker CBOs and service beneficiaries.
  • Uphold a non-discriminatory and respectful demeanor towards all individuals.
  • Remain flexible and available for unforeseen circumstances while in the field.
  • Uphold the image of MSF in all activities involving sex workers during fieldwork.
  • Treat CBO project vehicles as part of the clinic environment, adhering to infection prevention practices in cleaning and maintenance.
  • Any sight disturbance or ophthalmologic disease must be reported to Medical Coordinator for further management. Sight trouble or eye diseases do not affect the contract of the Driver unless the Driver does not communicate his/her disability to the Medical Coordinator.
  • Assist the Mechanic when they do mechanical services.
  • Document and transmit all checklists for weekly-check and services to Mechanic.
  • Ensure accurate records of fuel are kept in logbooks.
  • Record kilometers done each day in the car’s logbook.
  • Ensure that the vehicle is in a serviceable condition at the end of the day for the following days. If not, report this to the Supervisor (this includes enough fuel for the next day).
  • Ensure all supplies and tools are in the car and well maintained. The Driver reports to the Supervisor any missing or broken items.
  • Be flexible and helpful and therefore the Driver might be requested to perform additional activities whenever it is needed. Such as setting up of the clinic, dismantling of the clinic etc.

Requirements

Education At least a Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE) with at least a C1 Valid driving license. Good knowledge of country roads.
Experience Experience driving a Land Cruiser 4×4 and an IVECO Van; A minimum of 2 year’s driving experienceis essential, with prior involvement in MSF or other NGOs being advantageous.
Languages English and Chichewa
Knowledge Desirable knowledge of basic mechanics and good knowledge of mission area roads.
