About us:

Inter Aide is an international non-governmental organization that has been working in Malawi for more than 30 years in the field of agriculture, agroforestry, community health, access to water and maintenance of water points. Inter Aide is currently looking for dynamic and passionate professionals to fill the position of (1) Agroforestry Field Supervisor and (2) Agroforestry Field officer in Phalombe district.The project’s objective is to assist smallholder families in establishing agroforestry plantations, with a view to producing sustainable firewood on their farms and generating additional income through the sale of plantation produce, including fruits, fuelwood and timber. The project is expected to reduce the demand for household fuelwood from indigenous trees, thereby reducing pressure on natural resources, particularly in the Mulanje Mountain Forest Reserve.

Job Title:Agroforestry Field Supervisor

About the Position:

The Agroforestry Field Supervisor will be responsible for, implementing agroforestry
activities within the catchment area, including group coordination, training nursery groups, data collection, monitoring seasonal targets, supporting FMNR and tree management, reporting and provide supervision, technical support, and quality control of village-level agroforestry activities, ensuring technicians effectively deliver interventions, meet targets, and maintain high standards in nursery management, FMNR, tree planting, and farmer training.

Duties and Responsibilities:

In this capacity, the Agroforestry Field Supervisor will be responsible for:

  • Implementing agroforestry activities within the catchment area.
  • Supervise and support Agroforestry Technicians in the implementation of Agroforestry activities.
  • Conduct regular field visits to ensure quality and consistency of activities.
  • Provide technical guidance on: Nursery establishment and management, Tree planting and survival practices, Farmer Managed Natural Regeneration (FMNR), Direct sowing techniques.
  • Oversee village nursery programs, including seedling production and input management.
  • Monitor farmer adoption and participation in agroforestry practices.
  • Review and validate field data and reports.
  • Support farmer trainings and capacity building, including Training tree management and FMNR mentors.
  • Maintain strong relationships with local leaders, communities, and partners.
  • Support field experiments, Learning, and continuous improvement.
Minimum qualifications and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Agroforestry, Forestry, Agriculture, Environmental Science, or related field.
  • Minimum 3–5 years of relevant field experience in agroforestry, forestry, or agriculture projects with tree nurseries work.
  • Experience in supervising field staff or extension workers.
  • Strong background in community mobilization and farmer training.
Skills and Competencies:

  • Strong technical knowledge of agroforestry and sustainable land management.
  • Proactive leadership and excellent team supervision skills.
  • Strong planning, problem-solving, and organizational abilities.
  • Ability to collect, analyse, and report field data.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • High level of honesty and integrity.
  • Passionate about field work and interacting with rural communities on a daily basis
  • Ability to ride a motorcycle (valid license is an advantage).
  • Fluent in Chichewa and English.

About the Position:

The Agroforestry Field Officers will be responsible for the implementation of agroforestry
activities within the catchment area.

Duties and Responsibilities:

In this capacity, the Agroforestry Field Officer will be responsible for:

  • Facilitate group activities related to tree nurseries management.
  • Responsible for training all groups and beneficiaries in agroforestry topics: Plot design training, pot filling training, seed-pre-treatment and nursery management, out planting training, tree management training, …
  • Provide regular data from the tree nurseries (demand, germination rate, nursery inventory, sharing data, membership follow-up, and training participation) and ensure seasonal quantitative targets are met.
  • Provide technical back-up during tree planting and tree management activities in the communities in order to maximise the survival rate and the tree productivity.
  • Promote and follow-up Farmers Managed Natural Regeneration in targeted
    villages.
  • Collaborate with local institutions and stakeholders.
  • Monthly report and participation to strategy design.
Minimum qualifications and Experience:

  • Diploma in agroforestry, agriculture or forestry-linked fields.
  • Not less than three years demonstrated experience in supporting smallholder farmers in nursery management and other agroforestry related practices.
Skills and Competencies:

  • High degree of personal organization.
  • Passionate about agroforestry and proactive mindset.
  • High level of honesty and integrity.
  • Ability to work in autonomy.
  • Motorbike driving license class A is an added advantage.
  • Fluent in Chichewa and English.
