Title: Pharmacy Technician
Reports to: Kasese Health Centre Manager
Location: Kasese – Dowa
Job Summary
The Pharmacy Technician will be responsible for supporting the efficient and safe management of medicines and medical supplies at Kasese Health Centre. The role involves dispensing medications, maintaining accurate inventory and records, and ensuring proper storage and handling of pharmaceuticals in line with regulatory standards. The Pharmacy Technician will work closely with clinicians and nurses to promote effective drug therapy, provide guidance to patients on medication use, and utilize Electronic Health Records (EHR) systems for dispensing and stock management. Additionally, the role includes supervising pharmacy support staff coordinating drug orders and deliveries, and contributing to overall quality healthcare service delivery in a rural setting.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
The job holder will be expected to perform the following duties;
- Supervise drug and medical material orders to ensure the efficient and appropriate use of allocated funds
- Coordinate the receipt of international and local orders
- Fill patients’ prescriptions according to instructions given by clinicians
- Provide patients with information regarding drug interactions, side effects, and storage requirements
- Review and interpret clinician orders and detect therapeutic incompatibilities
- Check drug stocks and make orders from the main drug storage
- Maintains records for controlled drugs and removes outdated and damaged drugs from the pharmacy inventory
- Provide clinicians and nurses with information on proper drug therapy for patients
- Prepack drugs ready for dispensing
- Issue required medicines to patients and give instructions on how to use and store them
- Record data in relevant registers
- Use of Electronic Health Records (EHR) in conducting various processes such as requisition, dispensing, and inventory
- Organize monthly drug therapeutic committee meetings for drug selection
- Be the custodian of the medicines and medical supplies in the pharmacy
- Monitor drugs using HIMS tools and guidelines and report to the supervisor
- Supervises the work results of pharmacy assistant and support personnel
- Conduct proper handovers with necessary personnel
- Ensure inventory is conducted timely and always up to date
- Ensure the pharmacy is clean and drugs are packed properly on shelves
- Work as part of the team to provide support to other members of the healthcare team
- Conduct monthly ordering of drugs from the DHO office
- Compile and submit reports to the supervisor every month
- Perform any other duties assigned by the supervisor
Qualifications and Experience
- Diploma in Pharmacy obtained from a recognized institution
- At least 2 years of work experience with a clean track record
- Registered with the Pharmacy and Medicines Regulatory Authority
- Practical knowledge in the use of computer packages such as Ms word and Microsoft Excel
- Knowledge of the use of Electronic Health Records (EHR) will be an added advantage
- Self-starter and able to work under minimum supervision.
- Willing to work in the remotest settings and of a good understanding of health issues affecting rural communities in Malawi
- Team player with good interpersonal communication skills.
