In Malawi, MSF collaborates closely with the Ministry of Health and the local community, particularly in the Cervical Cancer project in the Blantyre and Chiradzulu districts, as well as the CBO Project in Zalewa and Dedza District.

MSFF is looking for its Blantyre Cervical Cancer Project Office:

MEDICINES DISPENSER – 1 POSITION

Workplace: Blantyre-Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital

Type of contract : 1-year Fixed Term Contract

Start date : July 2024

Main purpose of the position

To provide an accurate, timely, and qualitative dispensing service of drugs according to medical prescriptions and MSF protocols, standards, and procedures to improve the patient’s health conditions.

Job Summary

  • Dispense medication to patients according to medical prescription.
  • Ensure the medication dispensed is packed properly and is labelled with the correct drug name, strength, quantity,
  • expiry date, directions for use and includes additional required information
  • Provide clear instructions and advice on how to take the drug, when, how long, how to store, possible side-effects and
  • any other relevant warnings. Make sure the patient understands to ensure correct treatment.
  • Adhere to MSF practice policies and procedures for dispensing medicines and documentation of stock movements for
  • all controlled drugs and regular items.
  • Ensure and respect confidentiality in dispensing
  • Analyze prescriptions written by doctors and other health practitioners to ensure accurate doses, directions, and safety
  • of patients.
  • Maintain accurate dispensing records and regularly report them to the supervisor.
  • Ensure no medicines or material are taken out of the dispensary without authorization.
  • Place accurate and timely orders with the central stock, and always maintain minimum levels of stock. Report to the
  • supervisor when noticing unusual consumption of medicines.
  • Do regular inventory before any normal order, report any discrepancy to the supervisor and participate in the
  • investigation of any discrepancies
  • Routinely monitor the expiry dates of medicines ensuring that those with short expiry dates will be used first before
  • they become expired and report them to the supervisor.
  • Ensure returned and out-of-date medication is safely removed to a well designated quarantine zone for unwanted
  • pharmaceuticals, separated from the normal stock and sent back to the main pharmacy.
  • Organize and keep the pharmacy clean, ensure cleanliness and care in handling medicines to avoid contamination and
  • mix-up during prepacking.
  • Maintain dispensary equipment, ensuring it is clean, accurate and in a good state of repair.
  • Maintain the integrity and security of the dispensary by admitting only authorized personnel and ensuring that all
  • medicines are stored as appropriate.
  • Ensure good storage conditions of pharmaceutical items, i.e., monitoring temperature in the pharmacy and ensuring
  • that products requiring cold chain are suitably stored and received. Report any breach to the pharmacy supervisor.
  • Report immediately to the supervisor on any problem arising in the service (specially loss, robbery, quality problems
  • with medicines (abnormal changes in color, consistency, odor etc.), cold chain break, damage of medical equipment or
  • medicines).
  • Carry out Patient Therapeutic Education (PTE) and interact with patient using a patient-based approach:
    • Welcome patient, inform them about treatment protocols and adherence, always ensuring confidentiality. o Give appointment for the next drug delivery.
    • Inform Medical Doctor in case of a lack of adherence.
      Identify the reasons and find solutions to improve adherence.
    • Understand, record, and inform the Medical Doctor of any complaint received from patients related to medicine use or side effects.

Requirements:

Education A minimum of Certificate in Pharmacy
Experience At least 1 year working experince.
Knowledge Results and Quality Orientation; Teamwork and Cooperation; Behavioral Flexibility; Commitment to MSF Principles; Stress Management.
Languages English and Chichewa essential
