On behalf of our valued client, NASCOMEX Limited, the commercial arm of NASFAM, we are seeking a highly motivated and skilled Laboratory Technician to join their team and contribute to their success.
Background
The National Smallholder Farmers’ Association of Malawi (NASFAM) is a smallholder farmers owned business and development organization that seeks to promote farming business in order to develop their commercial capacity, and deliver programmes which enhance their productivity.
NASFAM has a commercial arm known as NASFAM Commodity Marketing Exchange (NASCOMEX) whose objective is to provide a better market to farmer members through value addition.
NASCOMEX is committed to providing high-quality laboratory services to support product quality, research and development (R&D), monitoring activities as well as external Laboratory services. The Laboratory Technician with a bias in microbiology will play a crucial role in ensuring that microbiological analyses are conducted accurately, efficiently, and in compliance with established protocols and standards.
Objective of the Position
The Laboratory Technician will be responsible for conducting microbiological tests, maintaining laboratory equipment, ensuring compliance with safety and quality standards, and contributing to the development of new testing protocols. The role requires a high level of technical expertise in microbiology and an ability to work both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
Key responsibilities
The tasks and responsibilities are based on the objectives set above, and the following are the expected specific tasks:
- Conduct microbiological analyses on various samples, including water, surfaces swabs, food – both raw mat, in-process and finished products, and biological specimens.
- Prepare culture media, reagents, and samples for testing.
- Perform bacterial, fungal, and viral identification tests using appropriate techniques such as microscopy, PCR, ELISA, and biochemical assays.
- Maintain accurate and detailed records of all laboratory activities and test results.
- Ensure all equipment is properly maintained and calibrated according to standard operating procedures (SOPs).
- Adhere to health and safety protocols to ensure a safe working environment.
- Assist in the development and validation of new microbiological testing protocols.
- Ensure compliance with laboratory quality assurance (QA) and quality control (QC) procedures.
- Participate in internal and external audits of the laboratory.
- Provide technical support and guidance to other laboratory staff and trainees.
- Qualifications and Experience:
- A diploma or degree in Medical Laboratory Sciences, Microbiology, or a related field.
- A minimum of two (2) years of experience working in a microbiology laboratory.
- Proficiency in microbiological techniques, including culture, isolation, and identification of microorganisms.
- Knowledge of molecular biology techniques, such as PCR and sequencing, is an added advantage, but not a requirement.
- Familiarity with laboratory information management systems (LIMS) is desirable.
- Strong understanding of laboratory health and safety regulations.
- Excellent attention to detail and accuracy in laboratory work.

- Reporting and Supervision
The Laboratory Technician will report directly to the Quality Management Systems Manager. They will be expected to provide regular updates on laboratory activities and participate in team meetings.
- Work Environment
The role is primarily laboratory-based, with occasional fieldwork for sample collection. The Laboratory Technician must be prepared to work with potentially hazardous materials and follow all safety protocols.
