Northern Region Water Board (NRWB)

The Northern Region Water Board (NRWB) is a Parastatal Organisation that was established in 1996 under the Waterworks Act, Cap 72:01 of the Laws of Malawi.
The core mandate of the NRWB is to provide potable water supply and waterborne sanitation services to urban, peri-urban, and market centers in the Northern Region of Malawi.

The NRWB seeks to recruit suitably qualified persons to fill the following vacant positions of:

GRADUATE ENGINEERS (GRADE RANGE P3-P1) FOUR POSITIONS

Duties and responsibilities
Reporting to the Zone Manager, the Graduate Engineers will be supporting the Zone Manager in undertaking various Water Operations Processes. The specific duties for the Scheme Coordinator shall include the following:

  • Developing and ensuring implementation of maintenance plans for the water reticulation systems and water supply plant and equipment.
  • Overseeing production and distribution of water throughout the Scheme water supply areas including compliance to water quality standards;
  • Ensuring that environmental protection activities, related projects and programmes within the Zone are implemented;
  • Designing and executing maintenance plans for water supply infrastructure including reticulation systems, plant and equipment in the Zone;
  • Ensuring effective customer service delivery within the Zone to enhance customer delight and satisfaction;
  • Designing and implementing effective debt collection strategies including revival of long-disconnected accounts (LDAs) for all classes of customers in the Zone.
  • Mainstreaming health and safety in all of the Zone’s operational activities;
  • Designing and executing strategies to reduce non-revenue water in the Zone.
  • Ensuring and managing water safety and drought contingency plans in the Zone;
  • Ensuring optimum utilization of energy in the Zone;
  • Identifying and dealing with various risks that may affect water supply and catchment protection activities in the Zone;
  • Ensuring effective monitoring and evaluation system covering all operational activities in the Zone; including preparation and submission of operation and performance reports.
  • Assisting in preparing and implementing annual budgets
  • Supervising and managing staff including training and developing them.
  • Participating in preparation of short and long-term water expansion plans for the Zone.
  • Handling human resource issues in liaison with the Department of Human Resources and Administration
  • Ensuring that spot checking is done for meter reading and other field work Ensuring that volume of water produced, volume of water passing through bulk and DMA meters, electricity meter readings, hours of power supply, power factor efficiency, quantity of water purification chemicals used and closing debtors are recorded on daily basis. Number of new water connections (NWCs) activated should be recorded weekly. Downtime of pumps (and reasons) and locations of pipe bursts on pipelines equal to and greater than 150mm in diameter should be recorded immediately these occur for the Zone
  • Carrying out any other lawful duties as assigned by the Zone Manager.

Academic and Professional Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering and/ or Water Engineering, Waste Water and/or Sanitation Engineering obtained from a recognised institution.
  • Candidates should be registered with Malawi Engineering Institution (MEI) as a Graduate Engineer or Student Engineer.
