ACADEMIC VACANCIES 

Mzuzu University (MZUNI) is a Public University established by the Laws of Malawi Cap 30:09 (Mzuzu University Act No. 12 of 1997). Currently, the University has six faculties of Education; Environmental Sciences; Health Sciences; Tourism, Hospitality and Management; Science, Technology and Innovation; and Humanities and Social Sciences. It is a dual mode University offering its courses through face-to-face and Open, Distance and e-Learning (ODeL) teaching and learning modes. It also offers some of its programmes on block, weekend and vacation release.

The University invites applications from suitably qualified candidates to fill the following vacant positions:

1. Department of Physics and Electronics

 Professor / Associate Professor / Senior Lecturer / Lecturer / Staff Associate in Physics 

Candidates must have a PhD or Master’s Degree in Physics specializing in Nuclear Physics, Nuclear Science and Technology, Solid-State Physics or Material Science plus a Bachelor of Science in Physics with at least Upper Second Class or Credit obtained from a reputable and accredited institution of higher learning. Candidates with a bachelor’s degree only will be considered for the position of Staff Associate. Candidates should submit academic transcripts in addition to copies of certificates.

 2. Department of Nursing and Midwifery

 (i) Professor / Associate Professor / Senior Lecturer / Lecturer / Staff Associate in Medical-Surgical Nursing 

 Candidates must have a PhD or Master’s Degree in Adult Health Nursing (Medical-Surgical Nursing) plus a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Midwifery or Adult Health Nursing with at least Upper Second Class or Credit obtained from a reputable and accredited institution of higher learning. Candidates with a bachelor’s degree only will be considered for the position of Staff Associate. Those with specialized qualifications in Critical Care, Theatre Nursing, Health Services Management and/or Nursing Education will have an added advantage.

(ii)      Professor / Associate Professor / Senior Lecturer / Lecturer / Staff Associate in Child Health Nursing 

 Candidates must have a PhD or Master’s Degree in Child Health Nursing plus a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Midwifery or Child Health Nursing with at least Upper Second Class or Credit obtained from a reputable and accredited institution of higher learning. Candidates with a bachelor’s degree only will be considered for the position of Staff Associate.

3. Department of Information and Communication Technology

Professor / Associate Professor / Senior Lecturer / Lecturer / Staff Associate in Information and Communication Technology 

Candidates must have a PhD or Master of Science in Information and Communication    Technology,    Computer    Engineering,    Computer Science, Informatics or Information Systems or related fields plus a bachelor’s degree in the same fields with at least Upper Second Class or Credit obtained from a reputable and accredited institution of higher learning. Candidates with a bachelor’s degree only will be considered for the position of Staff Associate.

4. Department of Geo-Sciences

Professor / Associate Professor / Senior Lecturer / Lecturer / Staff Associate in Physical Geography 

 Candidates must have a PhD or Master’s Degree in Physical Geography or related fields with a bias towards Climatology or Geology plus a bachelor’s degree in the same fields with at least Upper Second Class or Credit obtained from a reputable and accredited institution of higher learning. Candidates with knowledge in Geographic Thought and GIS will have an added advantage. Candidates with a bachelor’s degree only will be considered for the position of Staff Associate. Candidates should submit academic transcripts in addition to copies of certificates.

For all positions, candidates should address their suitability to meet the following requirements:

(a) Experience 

  Candidates with at least two (2) years of teaching experience at tertiary level in the subject area will have an added advantage.

(b) Duties and Responsibilities 

  1.   To teach and assess undergraduate and postgraduate courses;
  2. To develop and teach new courses, including postgraduate courses, as may be required
  3. To supervise undergraduate and postgraduate projects, including research;
  4. To actively participate in scholarly activities such as research and publication;
  5. To undertake outreach activities;
  6. To actively participate in resource mobilization activities;
  7. To serve on University Committees to which they may be appointed; and
  8. To undertake any other reasonable duties as required and assigned by their Head of Department, Dean of Faculty or Management.

(c) Attributes and Competencies 

  1.   Ability to work as a member of a team;
  2. Progressive knowledge in the subject areas for those applying for Lecturer position and above;
  3. Demonstrable commitment to academic excellence in teaching and research;
  4. Evidence of scholarly publications in peer-reviewed sources for candidates applying for the position of at least Senior Lecturer grade;
  5. Good communication skills; and
  6. Ability to work under pressure and to meet given deadlines.
