Vacancy for the Position of Vice-Chancellor

DMISJBU is faith based private University, founded, owned and managed by the Catholic Sisters of Daughters of Mary Immaculate and Collaborators. The University has three campuses, viz Lilongwe, Mangochi and Blantyre in Malawi. The University is part of the global network of DMI Foundations which hails from India with 5 Universities, 16 Colleges and 41 schools across different continents.

Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates to fill the vacant position of Vice Chancellor at DMI-St.John the Baptist University. This is a highly demanding position that requires higher education managers who have demonstrable capacity to initiate academic, technological and managerial innovations geared at making the University a vibrant and competitive institution operating in line with global trends in tertiary education. A. Reporting Relationship

  • Appointed by: The Owner of the University
  • Reports to: The Chancellor through the University Council and
  • To the Director Quality and Compliance of the Owner
  • Supervises: Deputy Vice Chancellors, Registrars, Principals, Deans of Schools, Directors, Managers of Academic and Administrative Units, and all University staff.

B. Entry Qualifications
Education: Holder of a PhD from a reputable University in any relevant academic discipline, viz Humanities, Education, Science, Management, Engineering and Technology.

Experience: At least fifteen (15) years of proven academic, research, and administrative experience, with at least five (5) years at senior management level in a higher education institution or comparable organization.

Academic Rank: Must be an Associate Professor or Professor with a distinguished academic and research record.

C. Duties and Responsibilities

  • Understand and implement the Vision, Mission and Values of the Founders of the University.
  • Fostering high value linkages and managing all stakeholders as stated and ensure the values of the institutions are upheld always.
  • Provide strategic leadership and overall management of the University in line with its vision, mission, and mandate.
  • Oversee the implementation of University policies, strategic plans, academic programs, and institutional development initiatives.
  • As the Chairperson of the University Senate and various Committees, create a collective management adhering to the values of the University
  • Presiding over employee performance management and leading in building a competent, experienced and motivated workforce.
  • Promote excellence in teaching, research, innovation, consultancy, and community engagement.
  • Ensure effective financial, human resource, and infrastructure management for sustainable institutional growth.
  • Foster partnerships, collaborations, and linkages with government, industry, development partners, and international institutions.
  • Provide leadership in resource mobilization, fundraising, and income-generating initiatives.
  • Ensure quality assurance, accountability, and compliance with statutory and regulatory requirements.
  • Promote institutional visibility, reputation, and competitiveness nationally, regionally, and internationally.
  • Develop, update and implement a Rolling Strategic Plan as laid out, update,
  • Overseeing the process of budgeting and leading in the mobilization of resources required for the operations of the University, and ensuring that resources are utilized prudently.
  • Report to the University Council on the performance, progress, and overall administration of the University.
  • Report periodically to the Director Quality and Compliance at the Owners office on the affairs of the University and its developments
  • Implement a TECHNOLOGY DRIVEN LEADERSHIP in managing the affairs of the University,

D. Key Qualifications and Competencies

  • Demonstrated visionary and transformational leadership in higher education or related sectors.
  • Strong record of academic scholarship, research publications, and postgraduate supervision.
  • Proven ability to mobilize resources and manage large institutional budgets and projects.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, negotiation, and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Strong understanding of higher education policies, governance, and quality assurance systems.
  • Capacity to lead institutional reforms, innovation, and organizational change.
  • High level of integrity, professionalism, and ethical conduct.

  • Enhance the University’s academic excellence, research output, and global ranking.
  • Increase institutional revenue, external funding, and strategic partnerships.
  • Improve graduate employability, innovation, and entrepreneurship outcomes.
  • Strengthen governance systems, operational efficiency, and service delivery.
  • Expand infrastructure development and digital transformation initiatives.
  • Implement the TECHNOLOGY DRIVEN APPROACH at all levels of academic and administrative decision making.
  • Increase international collaborations, staff and student exchange programs, and institutional visibility.
  • Promote a culture of innovation, inclusiveness, accountability, and high performance across the University.
