The Malawi Bureau of Standards (MBS) is a statutory organization established in 1972 by an Act of Parliament (Cap 51:02) with a mandate to promote standardization of commodities and their manufacture, production, processing or treatment and to provide for the verification and calibration of weighing and measuring instruments: and further to provide for matter incidental to or connected with standardization.
The MBS is inviting applications from suitably qualified and interested persons to fill the following vacancies:

Job title: Legal Metrology Officer
Grade: BS6
Reporting to: Senior Legal Metrology Officer
Department: Metrology Services
Section: Legal Metrology
Responsible for: Senior Legal Metrology Technician
Number of Posts : Four (3)
Job Purpose
To ensure the effective and efficient verification of weighing and measuring equipment.
Key roles and responsibilities
- Facilitating the verification of weighing and measuring instruments;
- Planning verification and inspection trips;
- Supervising Senior Legal Metrology Technicians;
- Maintaining accuracy of legal metrology working standards;
- Initiating legal proceedings against contraveners of the Act;
- Verifying working standards;
- Keeping and updating records for verification equipment;
- Initiating maintenance of equipment; i Compiling weekly progress reports; and
- Appraising the performance of Senior Legal Metrology Technicians.
Required Academic Qualifications and Experience
The ideal candidate should possess:
- A Bachelor of Science (Honours) Degree in Physics or A Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) Degree in Mechanical, Civil, Electrical and Electronics, Biomedical, Metallurgy Engineering or Metrology;
- At least 2 years’ practical experience in a related field.
