The Agricultural Research and Extension Trust (ARET) is Malawi’s premier institution in tobacco research, extension and training services. Established in 1995 and funded primarily by tobacco growers, ARET’s core activities include development and dissemination of tobacco technologies and training of tobacco stakeholders in order to sustain and improve agricultural productivity while conserving natural resources.
An opportunity has arisen for highly motivated professionals with requisite academic qualifications and technical expertise to fill existing vacant posts that have arisen in ARET as follows:
LECTURER IN ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCES – (1 POST)

Reporting To: Head of Academics
Job Purpose
To deliver high-quality teaching, research, and community engagement in Environmental Sciences with specific responsibility for Forest Management, Conservation Agriculture, and Horticulture. The Lecturer will contribute to curriculum development, student supervision, research activities, and institutional development in line with the college’s academic standards and national agricuitural priorities.
Duties
- Develop course outline and lesson plans and conduct class lessons within the subject area of environmental science.
- Develop and implement short courses for forest. bee keeping, conservation agriculture and other environmental sciences related courses for the College
- Facilitate experiential learning through demonstrations, held visits, fruit tree nursery management, agroforestry plots, and Conservation Farming trials
- Contrbute to the development and continuous improvement of courses
- Participate in curriculum development and review.
- Conduct institutional research in areas such as Sustainable Forestry. Conservation Agricultural Systems, Soil and Water Management, Horticultural Production Systems, and Ecosystem Restoration
- Publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals and present in academic and professional conferences.
- Coordinate forestry and outreach programmes for the College
- Contribute to Writing of proposals to generate external funding to support forestry and environment management research and community engagement.
- Develop collaborative partnerships with key organizations within the forestry and natural resources management sector
Key Competences
- Strong knowledge in forest ecology. silviculture, agroforestry systems, conservation farming principles, soil and waler conservation, and horticultural crop production
- Ability to conduct both theoretical and practical field-based instruction
- Ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary academic environment
Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree (credit or above), in Environmental Sciences, Forestry, Agriculture, or closely related discipline. Master’s degree will be an added advantage
- Teaching experience at tertiary level. University certificate of education, will be an added advantage
- Demonstrated research and publication records will be an added advantage.
- Five years of relevant experience in the subject area
