POSITION OVERVIEW:
The job holder reports to the Nurse In charge. A nurse works as a member of the nursing team, with the Ward/theatre in-charge as a team leader, in the provision of acceptable standards of nursing care and Comfort to assigned patients, in accordance with the agreed hospital policies. She/he is also expected to Provide theatre, O.P.D and clinical outreach patient care.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
General Patient Care
- Providing comprehensive safe and effective evidence based nursing and care to achieve identified health outcomes as well as planning and evaluating nursing care in consultation with the multidisciplinary health care team and patients using effective interpersonal communication
- Recognizing and upholding the rights of all clients accessing health services and advocating on their behalf. This also includes maintaining cultural sensitivity.
- Carrying out nursing practice in accordance with legislation, common law and code of ethics: and taking action to rectify unsafe nursing practice and or unprofessional conduct.
- Ensuring a clean, safe and secure environment for patients/ residents/clients and visitors utilizing a contemporary quality and risk management framework and ensuring that infection control procedures are followed.
- Monitors nutritional status of the patients and manages nutrition accordingly
- Performs wound dressings using aseptic techniques
- Makes occupied and unoccupied beds for in-patients
- Participates in all handover sessions, either providing or receiving handover from colleagues
- Ensures all laboratory tests ordered are done and results placed in patients files
- Administration of Enteral, parental drugs and insertion of Intravenous lines.
- Pray with patients at different points of care and provide other spiritual support as needed to patients.
- Offering nutritional advise to patients in IPD and OPD
Theatre Patient Care
- Performs pre-operative and intra-operative patient management using the stipulated checklist and post-operative patient management using the post-operative chart
- Ensure preparation of the material and equipment in the operating theater, receive patients and take them from the preparation room to the operating theater, making sure they are ready for surgery
- Implement the hygiene, sterilization, asepsis and disinfection protocols and procedures at all times, before, during and after operations, to ensure the safety conditions of patients and staff
- Organize patient transportation from the operating theater to the recovery room and carry-out and/or supervise all the postoperative activities to prepare the operating theater for the next scheduled operation or emergency
- Preparing patients physically, psychologically and spiritually before procedure for better outcome
Administration:
- Checks on stationery stocks
- Orders drugs and supplies in the absence of the ward in-charge
- Reports any maintenance needs in his/her work area using the maintenance book on the reception with one copy sent to line manager.
- Maintaining accurate clinical documentation and patient information.
- Admits patients using Hospital admission forms
- Prepare timely and accurate records of patient history and recovery charts
Relationship with co-workers and patients:
- Providing high level communication skills that include: interpersonal, verbal, written, computer and ability to work cohesively as an active member of the multidisciplinary team.
- Assists Doctors in ward rounds
- Assists Doctors during consultations in clinics
- Instructs patient attendants as required
- Instructs cleaners as necessary
- Providing health education to clients and patients on different health issues
- Assisting with activities of daily living for the patients
Organizational and Self Development:
- Identifying areas for clinical research and recognizing value in contributing to the delivery of nursing care
- Participates in teaching in Nursing courses and any in-house teachings
- Take initiative to ensure rotation to all point of nursing-care to add on skills
- Support the implementation of Safe Care standards and ensuring that other team members are upholding the standards.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor’s degree in Nursing and a current license to practice nursing required.
- A minimum of three years nursing experience in busy hospital.
- Those with experience in pediatric or/and orthopedic nursing will have added advantage.
- Computer literate – those with experience working with Electronic Medical System will have an added advantage
