Agricultural Research and Extension Trust (ARET)

The Agricultural Research and Extension Trust (ARET) is Malawi’s premier institution in tobacco research, extension and training services. Established in 1995 and funded primarily by tobacco growers, ARET’s core activities include development and dissemination of tobacco technologies and training of tobacco stakeholders to sustain and improve agricultural productivity while conserving natural resources.

An opportunity has arisen for highly motivated professionals with requisite academic qualifications and technical expertise to fill existing vacant posts that have arisen in ARET as follows: –

EXTENSION AGENT

Job purpose

Responsible for dissemination of research proven information and technologies to farmers and relevant stakeholders.

The incumbent shall be reporting to the Regional Extension Officer

Key Functions

  • Prepare periodic work plans for the assigned extension area.
  • Conduct farmer mobilization to undertake extension activities.
  • Conduct farmer training needs assessment.
  • Foster collaboration with relevant stakeholders and fellow Extension Agents within the Trust.
  • Mount demonstrations including Farmer Field Schools on various technologies and practices.
  • Conduct forestry advisory services to farmers.
  • Identify critical issues land resource issues from growers and formulate and implement programmes aimed at alleviating the various constraints.
  • Mobilize farmers to participate in tree planting programmes.
  • Data collection for subject matter specialist.
  • Formulate farmer groups.
  • Sale of tobacco seeds, tree seeds and publications.
  • Prepare and submit extension technical reports for the year.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Diploma in Agriculture
  • Two years’ work experience
