Alliance One Tobacco (Malawi) is seeking applications for the position of:
BATTERY CHARGING BAY TECHNICIAN
The successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining, diagnosing, and repairing lead-acid and lithium-ion forklift batteries, associated chargers, and forklift electrical systems across a large industrial fleet.
Reporting directly to the MVM supervisor, this is a hands-on technical role requiring strong electrical knowledge, attention to detail and ability to work independently with minimum supervision. The key responsibilities for the successful candidate w among other things include the following:-
- Perform routine inspections, testing, and maintenance of lead-acid and lithium-ion forklift batteries.
- Ensuring that all batteries and charging systems are safe, reliable, and operating at peak efficiency at all times.
- Diagnose and repair faults on forklift electrical systems, battery chargers, and battery management systems (BMS).
- Maintain the battery bay area to a high standard of safety, cleanliness, and compliance.
- Conduct regular battery capacity testing, acid level checks, and charging performance assessments
- Monitor battery usage and charger performance to prevent downtime and extend equipment life.
- Troubleshoot and resolve electrical and electronic faults in forklifts and associated systems.
- Keep accurate maintenance records and report any critical issues to management promptly.
- Ensure compliance with safety regulations, electrical codes, and environmental standards when handling batteries and chargers.
Qualifications, Experience and Personal Attributes
- Relevant Technical Diploma in Electrical Engineering, Industrial Electronics, or related field.
- Minimum 5 years of hands-on experience working with industrial battery systems, including lead-acid and lithium-ion technologies.
- Proven experience with battery chargers, DC systems, and forklift electrical components (contactors, controllers, wiring, relays, etc.).
- Ability to interpret electrical schematics and wiring diagrams.
- Strong understanding of battery safety, acid handling, and electrical hazard prevention.
- Experience in industrial maintenance or material handling equipment servicing preferred.
- Physically fit and capable of working in an industrial environment.
- Excellent troubleshooting skills and ability to work independently.
- Integrity, trustworthy and ethically upright professional in good standing with the Malawi Institute of Engineers
