VACANCY: Tourism Manager
Location: Majete Wildlife Reserve, Chikwawa, Malawi

About African Parks
African Parks (AP) is a non-profit conservation organization that manages protected areas across Africa in partnership with governments and local communities. In Malawi, AP manages Majete Wildlife Reserve, Liwonde National Park, and Nkhotakota Wildlife Reserve through a Public-Private Partnership with the Government of Malawi.
Position Overview
An exciting opportunity has arisen for the position of Tourism Manager, based at Majete Wildlife Reserve. The successful candidate will report directly to the African Parks Tourism Consultant and, in their absence, to the Park Manager.
Under the guidance of the Consulting Tourism Manager, this role is responsible for leading and overseeing the strategic development and operational management of all tourism-related products within the park.
The Tourism Manager will focus on driving revenue generation, promoting sustainability, fostering community engagement, and ensuring alignment with conservation objectives.
Key responsibilities include building and strengthening the park’s tourism brand, enhancing guest experiences, improving occupancy and profitability, and developing strategic partnerships.
This is a hands-on role requiring extensive engagement with the various tourism sites across the park.
The position also offers career growth potential, with the possibility of developing into a Commercial Manager role based on performance.
Key Responsibilities
1. Lodge, Visitor Sites, and Camps Management
- Oversight of Thawale Lodge, Mwembezi Day Centre and Restaurant, Research Camp, Game Capture Camp, Community Camp, Nekamba Hide, Membezi Gorge Bush Camp, Malaria Camp, Leadership Camp, various visitor sites, and the Conference Room.
- Delivering a world-class tourism product aligned with African Parks standards.
- Managing tourism department staff and liaising with concession holders and guides.
- Acting regularly as Relief Manager at Thawale Lodge.
- Ensuring high standards of maintenance, attention to detail, and excellent customer service.
- Overseeing menu planning, stock control, and waste management.
- Maintaining grounds and pest control across all sites.
2. Reservations
- Daily management of reservations, information collection, and payments as per SOPs.
- Coordination with Finance on revenue accounting.
- Overseeing tourism-related airstrip usage.
- Customer interaction and agent communication to ensure smooth bookings.
- Staff training and performance oversight.
3. Tourism Infrastructure Management
- Maintenance and oversight of all tourism assets and vehicles.
- Ensuring timely repairs and routine maintenance
- Inventory management and monthly checks.
4. Marketing, Communication, and Reporting
- Promoting and developing new tourism activities.
- Managing social media platforms with pre-planned content schedules and engagement.
- Producing weekly highlights and various monthly reports (Tourism, Marketing, Social Media, PM Business Plan, African Parks).
- Managing staff attendance records in line with labour laws.
- Producing fuel, paraffin, and mileage usage reports.
- Hosting and visiting local and international agents.
- Maintaining and distributing updated marketing materials.
5. Logistics and Procurement
- Optimizing staff productivity and time management.
- Budget adherence and expenditure tracking.
- Planning itineraries for visits/events.
- Timely procurement of goods within budget.
- Verifying purchase orders and tracking pricing.
- Sourcing reliable suppliers.
- Efficient stock management, including monthly stocktakes.
- Overseeing merchandise opportunities, curio shop sales, and other retail activities.
Candidate Requirements
- A Degree in Tourism or Hospitality Management.
- Minimum 3 years’ experience in safari camp and food & beverage (F&B) management in remote areas.
- At least 2 years’ experience in reservations.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office and social media platforms.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Strong planning, organizational, and leadership skills.
- High attention to detail and a proactive attitude.
- A team player with a passion for developing staff.
- Excellent interpersonal and cross-cultural communication skills.
- Must be a Malawian citizen or eligible to work in Malawi.
- Advantageous: Experience with ResRequest, MyStock, TallOrder systems, or retail/curio shop environments.
