 Islamic Relief is a faith-inspired humanitarian aid and development agency working to save and transform the lives of some of the world’s most vulnerable people. We work in over 40 countries, assist people of all faiths and none according to need and do not discriminate in any way. Our proximity means we can often respond swiftly to emergencies and work in areas that other organisations cannot access.

We are the only UK-based Muslim faith-inspired charity to have been certified against the Core Humanitarian Standard on Quality and Accountability (CHS), which is designed to ensure that charities best meet the needs of the communities they serve.

Islamic Relief is a member of the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC), we have Consultative Status with the UN Economic and Social Council, and we are a signatory to the Code of Conduct for the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.

IRW’s International Programme Division is recruiting for the position of ‘Country Director’ for Malawi. The Country Director would be responsible to:

  • Represent Islamic Relief at all levels in the country.
  • Strengthen IR’s relations with the wider humanitarian and development community to consolidate and develop the visibility and image of the organisation.
  • Deliver effective programmes according to the Country Programme and Regional Strategies.
  • Facilitate professional and systematic communication and cooperation between the different parts of the IR family to ensure maximum impact on the organisation’s work.
  • Lead, manage and develop staff in order to ensure that the country office is capable of fully achieving its agreed targets.
  • Risk management, ensuring compliance and quality improvement of the country programme

 The Successful candidate must have or be;

  • Work experience as a Country Director, or a senior management role with an International NGO.
  • Proven track record of working with INGOs in developing countries in rehabilitation; development or emergency contexts.
  • Substantial experience and knowledge of effective budgetary control and grant management.
  • Knowledge and experience of fundraising from and dealing with EC, ECHO, UN and DFID.
  • Experience of and commitment to participatory management and maintaining a supportive, open environment to ensure the learning and development of all staff.
  • An in-depth understanding of international development issues.
  • Gender approaches in relief and recovery.
  • Community Development, Social Protection, Food Security, Urban Poverty, etc.
  • Excellent command of written and spoken English
