Lotus is undertaking refurbishment and maintenance of the process plant and other facilities in preparation for production to commence in the near future.

Lotus (Africa) Limited invites applications from suitably qualified, energetic, and self-motivated Malawian nationals to join its team at Kayelekera Mine in Karonga District in the position below:

RADIATION OFFICER

Employment Type: Fixed Term (12 months)

JOB PURPOSE

The Radiation Officer will be responsible for supporting the radiation protection program at Kayelekera Uranium Mine by conducting radiation monitoring, ensuring regulatory compliance, and assisting in maintaining a safe environment for workers and the surrounding community.

This position is designated for a local resident and requires a basic understanding of safety and radiation practices. The role will also support site-wide safety efforts and provide data for radiation risk assessments and reporting.

REPORTING TO: SHRT Superintendent

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Compliance and Reporting:
    • Ensure site compliance with national radiation safety regulations and international standards (AERA, IAEA)
    • Prepare and submit radiation monitoring reports and data logs.
    • Provide assistance and technical advice to all departments regarding aspects of Radiation Management.
    • Providing assistance with the testing and decontamination for the transportation of radioactive materials.
    • Report abnormal radiation levels or potential contamination incidents immediately to the SHRT Superintendent.
    • Carry out other duties as required or directed by the Senior Radiation Officer or the Radiation Coordinator
  • Safety & Awareness:
    • Participate in safety inspections and contribute to radiation hazard identification and risk mitigation.
    • Provide basic radiation safety information to new and existing employees.
    • Support the delivery of toolbox talks and radiation-related induction content as needed.
  • Emergency Preparedness:
    • Assist in response to radiological incidents or alarms as part of the Emergency Response Team.
    • Follow proper procedures for decontamination and isolation in the event of a radiation breach.

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE:

  • MSCE (Malawi School Certificate of Education) with a strong science background (Physics/Chemistry preferred).
  • Certificate or short course in radiation safety, occupational safety, or related field – essential.
  • Valid basic safety training certifications such as:
    • First Aid
    • Fire Safety
    • Working at Heights (advantageous)
    • Confined Space Entry (advantageous)
    • 1-3 years of experience in a mining, industrial, or laboratory environment (preferably uranium or heavy metals sector).
    • Prior exposure to radiation work, environmental sampling, or health physics – advantageous.

CORE COMPETENCIES/SKILLS

  • Basic understanding of ionizing radiation and safety principles.
  • Knowledge of radiation protection regulations and practices.
  • Ability to operate and maintain radiation detection instruments.
  • Good record-keeping and reporting skills.
  • Awareness of environmental and worker health protection standards.
  • Ability to follow procedures and respond calmly during abnormal situations.
  • Computer literacy (Excel, Word, email communication).
  • Able to work independently and within a team in remote or high-risk environments.
  • Proficient in English and Chichewa (written and verbal).
