VACANCY: CARPENTRY ARTISAN

STATUS: One-year contract subject to renewal based on performance

African Parks (AP) is a not-for-profit organization that secures a mandate to conserve through Public-Private Partnerships with Governments and communities for the rehabilitation and long-term management of protected areas in Africa, and here in Malawi, AP has secured this mandate for the management of Majete Wildlife Reserve, Liwonde National Park and Nkhotakota Wildlife Reserve.

An opportunity has arisen for the post of Carpentry Artisan tenable at Majete Wildlife Reserve in Chikwawa.

The Carpentry Artisan will directly report to the Technical Supervisor and will be responsible for assisting with the constructing, repairing, and maintaining a variety of wooden structures within the reserve, including staff housing, offices, ranger outposts, and tourism facilities.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE (but not limited to):

  • Interpret and work from detailed technical drawings and plans
  • Construct, repair, and install wooden frameworks, roofing, doors, windows, and fittings
  • Operate and maintain carpentry tools and machinery safely
  • Assist with planning and estimating material needs for projects
  • Work independently and in coordination with the reserve’s maintenance and technical teams
  • Uphold high standards of craftsmanship and ensure all work is safe, durable, and suited for the reserve’s remote environment
  • Adhere to all safety and environmental standards in a protected area

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • Strong technical knowledge in structural carpentry and finishing
  • Ability to read and interpret building plans
  • Experience working in remote or rural settings is an advantage
  • Physically fit and capable of working outdoors in challenging conditions including Manual Labour
  • Honest, dependable, and aligned with conservation values
  • Ability to train and mentor semi-skilled team members
  • Proficiency in Chichewa required; English language skills an advantage

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

  • Tevet Artisan Certificate Level 1 or 2 / Trade test certificate level 3 or 2
  • 5 years working experience in a similar position
  • Operating Electrical carpentry equipment (e.g. Power tools) will be an added advantage.
