AMG Global’s Client, the Embassy of Iceland in Malawi, seeks to engage a Civil Engineer. The position is tenable in Lilongwe, Malawi.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Embassy of Iceland seeks a Civil Engineer to support its district programmes in Malawi. The position is based in Lilongwe but requires regular travel to partner districts.

The Civil Engineer, reporting to the Deputy Head of Mission, will focus on the construction and rehabilitation of infrastructure for education, health, and water systems under the Embassy’s district support programmes. This includes planning, procurement, implementation, and monitoring of construction projects in close collaboration with implementation, and strict council teams. The position also involves ensuring project quality, efficiency, and long-term maintenance strategies for infrastructure.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Monitoring and Technical Support:

  • Provide technical expertise for all Embassy-funded construction projects, from planning to execution and supervision;
  • Develop and oversee effective monitoring and quality control processes for construction projects;
  • Collaborate with district officials to monitor contractor performance and evaluate service providers;
  • Support procurement processes, including tender evaluations and bid reviews;
  • Review bills of quantities and ensure financial certifications align with pre-approved budgets;
  • Identify and manage risks, initiating corrective actions when necessary; and
  • Conduct regular field visits with Embassy staff and district teams.

Financial Oversight:

  • Ensure technical inputs and cost estimates for construction components are accurate and included in project plans and budgets; and
  • Track resource use and project progress to ensure deliverables are met on time and within budget.

Reporting and Handover:

  • Prepare progress, handover, and final reports for construction projects; and
  • Ensure proper documentation and smooth handover of completed facilities to beneficiaries.

Other Duties:

  • Perform additional tasks as assigned by the Deputy Head of Mission.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelors Degree in Civil Engineering, Masters will be advantageous;
  • At least 5 years of proven experience in civil engineering, construction projects, and contract management;
  • A teamwork spirit, flexibility and openness to work in a collegiate environment;
  • Excellent project management, organizational and time management skills;
  • Strong written and spoken English proficiency; and
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
