Mzuzu University (MZUNI) is a Public University established by the Laws of Malawi Cap 30:09 (Mzuzu University Act No. 12 of 1997). Currently, the University has six faculties of Education; Environmental Sciences; Health Sciences; Tourism, Hospitality and Management; Science, Technology and Innovation; and Humanities and Social Sciences. It is a dual mode University offering its courses through face-to-face and open, distance and e-learning (ODeL) teaching and learning modes. It also offers some of its programmes on block, week-end and vacation release.

The University invites applications from suitably qualified candidates to fill the following vacant position:

Vacancy No.3: Plumber

Reporting to the Estates Development Officer, the successful candidate will be responsible for installation and maintenance of well-functioning systems that transport water, waste, gases or hot liquids.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Reading blueprints and drawings to understand or plan the layout of plumbing, waste disposal and water supply systems;
  2. Installing and maintaining water supply systems;
  3. Cutting, assembling and installing pipes and tubes with attention to existing infrastructure;
  4. Locating, repairing or replacing issues with water supply and sewer lines such as leakages and blockages;
  5. Installing and repairing waste disposal and sanitary systems;
  6. Repairing fixtures such sinks, cisterns, wcs e.t.c;
  7. Recording faults and identifying the required materials for maintenance;
  8. Recording water levels in MZUNI facilities;
  9. Taking inventories of the maintenance requirements; and
  10. Supervising outsourced service providers.

Qualifications

  1. Grade 1 Trade Test Certificate or TEVET Level III Certificate in Plumbing; and
  2. Minimum of three (3) years’ experience as a Plumber in a large organization

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  1. Excellent understanding of water distribution and disposal systems in institutional buildings;
  2. Ability to handle plumbing tools and equipment such as pipe wrenches, pipe cutters and plungers;
  3. Ability to work under pressure;
  4. Good communication and interpersonal skills; and
  5. Physically fit and able to work in all spaces and odd time.
