EGPAF has worked in Malawi since 2001. Today, EGPAF Malawi implements evidence-based HIV prevention, care and treatment interventions in 177 health facilities in nine districts through EGPAF’s U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief/U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (PEPFAR/CDC) – funded Achieving HIV Epidemic Control through Scaling Up Quality Testing, Care and Treatment in Malawi.

EGPAF in Collaboration with Lighthouse Malawi as well as Right to Care will be implementing a research study called “Validation of an HIV Testing Eligibility Screening Tool to Identify Adults Living with HIV in Malawi’’. The study will take place in 24 public health facilities in EGPAF and Lighthouse Trust supported scale up districts of Chiradzulu, Blantyre, Zomba, Thyolo, Lilongwe and Mzimba. The study will be implemented for about two months in all the study districts.

EGPAF in collaboration with implementing partners seeks to fill the following open temporary positions for this project. 

Position                        :  Qualitative Research Assistants (2)

How will you fight for an AIDS-free generation?

The research Assistant will be responsible for conducting in-depth interviews and focus group discussions; and transcription.  He/she will work closely with the operations research unit, study coordinator and study sites to ensure timely and accurate collection of research data.

No two days are alike at EGPAF, but what can you expect in this role?

  • Attend study training and take initiative to be well versed with the protocol, study procedures and applicable EGPAF policies and procedures
  • Sign data confidentiality agreements and maintain ethical conduct in all study locations.
  • Ensure that there is availability of necessary daily study materials before recruiting study participants
  • Screening and enrollment of study participants (health care workers) for focus group discussion as per study protocol
  • Maintain confidentiality of study participants.
  • Obtain informed consent from study participants
  • Leading and moderating focus group discussions. Transcribe and translate all recorded focus group discussions into English
  • Completing study documentation, in accordance with study protocol and EGPAF policies and procedures
  • Meet with Study Coordinator regularly to ensure data is being collected according to the protocol and standard operating procedures
  • Maintaining security of information and data collected
  • Maintaining inventory of study supplies, in his/her custody
  • Trouble shooting and resolving challenges encountered
  • Providing daily recruitment updates or challenges to the Study Coordinator
  • perform any other research related duties as required.

To be successful, you will need to have:

  • Minimum of a degree in health sciences, social sciences, or related fields
  • Proven experience in qualitative research and public health related research
  • Previous experience leading and moderating focus group discussions
  • Prior experience in transcribing and translating FGD or IDI audio recordings from Chichewa or Tumbuka to English

  • Professional and respectful
  • Self-motivated with good problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Fluency in English and Chichewa or Tumbuka
  • Willingness to work in different districts
