Background

CQC has been active in Malawi since 2018 with an initial focus on clean cookstove programs in rural settings. To date, we have distributed clean cookstoves to approximately one million households through implementing partners and our own operational arm (CQC Direct). Within the past year, our country office has rapidly expanded its portfolio to include nature-based carbon removals projects, cookstoves for the peri-urban/urban market, and the introduction of an alternative fuels’ ecosystem (pellets, LPG). To support our growing staff and ongoing programmatic development, CQC is looking for a senior leader to overse the Malawi country office.

Malawi Country Director

The Malawi Country Director (CD) is the senior CQC representative in Malawi. The CD has overall responsibility and leadership of the Country Office’s performance, s/he represents CQC in the country, guiding a relevant program strategy development and implementation consistent with CQC’s global strategy. S/he will oversee operations and staff across all programs (cookstoves, fuels, NbS) in Malawi including training, administration, human resources, logistics and financial management.

Core Responsibilities

Strategic and Operational Planning and Implementation

  • Responsibility for the implementation of short term and long-term strategy, as well as designing and approving new opportunities for the entity operations.
  • Lead regular and participatory management team meetings to review the overall financial and operational performance of the country office.
  • Provides leadership and strategic support on the development of the Country Office’s role as an innovator and best in class carbon project developer including developing genuine partnerships with local organizations and institutions.
  • Ensures effective project implementation monitoring and evaluation systems that allows for proper reporting, timely course corrections, and learning.

Financial, Budget and Administration Management

  • Oversees and provide support to program support and finance staff in the development of the Country Office’s annual budget.
  • Ensures that the Country Office performance and audit results are satisfactory.
  • Monitor and analyze the Country Office cost structure, particularly in anticipation of changes in the program portfolio.
  • Submit other reports to HQ as requested.

Representation and Communications

  • Represents CQC at executive levels with Malawi government officials and other external stakeholders and, as needed, represents at a local level with community leadership and community members.
  • Liaises with the Malawi government to ensure that the Country Office has the necessary agreements needed to operate transparently, such as, updated mutually recognized country agreements for carbon projects as well as program related agreements with relevant line ministers.

Staff Development and Management

  • Leads by example, communicate clear vision to staff, leadership, and inspiration to the Country Office, shows accountability and hold staff accountable for demonstrating CQC core values.
  • Ensures that the Country Office structure and the organization of workflows reflects ongoing needs of Country Office operations and works to build a more integrated operating environment.
  • Identifies capacity building and training priorities across teams in Malawi, and reinforcement of systems and processes for operational excellence.

Skills, Qualifications & Experience

  • Advanced Degree(s) in relevant fields or minimum 10 years senior management experience. Preference for private sector company management experience.
  • Experience in establishing and maintaining collaborative relationships with the Government of Malawi.
  • Ability to travel internationally and maintains up-to-date passport, ability to drive and maintain a valid driver’s license.
    Advance working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.
    Fluent in English (speaking, reading, and writing).
