Main purpose of the Position

Organizing and ensuring medical consultations to the target population providing treatment to patients within the scope of his/her medical competencies and referring them when appropriate, according to MSF protocols, procedures and the universal hygiene standards to guarantee quality and efficiency of the service provided.

Main Responsibilities

  • Ensuring the implementation and standardization of MSF clinical policies, tools, and hygiene protocols in order to minimize clinical risks and to guarantee the quality of patient care management. Promote and maintain confidentiality regarding all patient cases and records
  • Implementing diagnosis, prescription and prevention procedures that fall under the scope of his/her competencies applying medical knowledge, asking appropriate questions to patients and following protocols in force as well as using laboratory services, when necessary, in order to ensure a correct implementation of the medical treatments and to refer patients when appropriate.
  • Ensure that all staff using medical devices are qualified and trained. Ensure cleaning and minor maintenance tasks are performed according to the protocols. Report any malfunction to the project biomedical service.
  • In cases of emergency, carrying out first aid care and treatment according to protocols in order to reduce mortality rates
  • Recording in the individual patient’s card and registration books, all performed medical activities (drugs prescribed, lab results, vaccination status, epidemiological activity, doses, etc.) keeping data traceability in order to ensure patients treatment continuity.
  • Participating in data collection and reporting when required
  • Knowing and implementing Patient Therapeutic Education (PTE), i.e. keeping in contact with all patients, providing them with information regarding their health and responding to their questions.
  • Knowing and promoting the proper application of Post Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) Kit.

Specific Accountabilities

The Clinical Officer in this position will provide initial and continuous medical assessment and psychosocial screening for all patients diagnosed with cervical cancer referred for palliative care. The outcomes of this assessment will be used to coordinate and plan appropriate ongoing management of physical and psychosocial challenges in collaboration with external health care providers.

  • Initiate a comprehensive assessment and regular review of palliative care patients using an integrated and anticipatory approach.
  • Initiate and participate in ongoing advanced care with the patient and primary caregiver.
  • Initiate and participate in the preparation for end of life with the patient and primary caregivers
  • Provide support, advice, education and advocacy for all patients and their primary caregiver.
  • Plan and coordinate services (with other disciplines) relating to end of life care with the patient and primary caregiver.
  • Anticipate after-hours requirements and ensure preparations are in place for patients and primary caregiver should the need arise.
  • Ensure that patient care plan meets professional, organizational, legal and ethical requirements always.
  • Deliver a high standard of care regardless of patients’ or colleagues’ differing values, beliefs, culture and/or social context.
  • Contribute to excellent multidisciplinary practice and promote respectful and constructive team relationships.
  • Remaining flexible, cooperating with multi-disciplinary team, and performing any other task needed to ensure quality of care, good organization of the ward, on request of the managers.

Requirements

Education Diploma or degree in Clinical Medicine and current membership in Medical Council of Malawi required, bachelor’s degree in Palliative care required
Experience One year’s previous clinical supervision experience is desirable.

Previous experience in Public Health, obstetrics, gynecology, and/or infectious diseases- HIV/AIDS/STDs/TB, general medicine or minor surgery preferred

Language Fluency in Chichewa and English essential
