Banja La Mtsogolo (BLM) is a Malawian Non-Governmental Healthcare Organization established in 1987. BLM provides quality Family Planning and Reproductive Healthcare services, including HIV/AIDS information and interventions. BLM is a senior member of the MSI Reproductive Choices Partnership, which operates in 43 countries globally. The organization exists to improve the quality of life in Malawi through family planning and reproductive health services.
BLM serves over 800,000 clients annually, making a significant contribution to national family planning objectives. It has national coverage, operating through 23 clinics and numerous Public Sector Strengthening (PSS) and Outreach clinic sites.

Position: Accountant
Reporting to: Finance Manager Location: Support Office – Lilongwe
Role Purpose
Reporting to the Senior Accountant – Financial Reporting, the Accountant will be responsible for accurate and meaningful inventory information that contributes to the timely production of financial management reports to support decision-making by the Senior Leadership Team.
In line with BLM policies, the role will ensure compliance with internal controls that safeguard assets, minimize financial risk, and satisfy donor and statutory audit requirements. The position will maintain inventory accounting records in compliance with BLM systems and procedures, donor requirements, and Government regulations.
The role will also support country programme teams with project accounting and reporting, ensuring full compliance with MSI regulations, IFRS, and specific grant/donor requirements.
Key Responsibilities
Effective management and oversight of working capital (stock):
- Manage BLM’s cash flows, including accurate forecasting to ensure availability of funds for programme needs; follow up and request cash replenishments from MSI; enforce strict expenditure controls.
- Consolidate monthly stock movement reports and process stock transactions into the monthly journal template.
- Coordinate production of monthly stock usage, obsolete stock, and expired stock reports.
- Coordinate monthly stock counts for all channels and the warehouse.
- Support the Senior Accountant in producing monthly, half-year, and annual stock valuation reports.
- Perform stock expenditure analysis and reconciliations.
- Support analysis of periodic stock-holding status reports to improve commodity planning and product availability.
- Lead planning and conducting of end-of-project stock counts and prepare stock count reports.
- Review and update stock standard operating procedures and develop process flows for efficient inventory management.
- Support the Warehouse Manager in determining economic order quantities (EOQs) and stock levels.
- Ensure forecasting and quantification are done at team level to inform reorder levels.
- Work with relevant managers to ensure inventory is properly costed.
- Conduct spot checks and support visits to service delivery channels.
- Prepare stock lead schedules to support inventory balances in financial statements, management accounts, and donor reports.
- Support preparation for internal, statutory, and end-of-project audits.
- Ensure prepayments are systematically amortized in line with accounting standards.
- Maintain records of prepayment amortization with full audit support.
- Attend monthly balance sheet review calls with the Regional Support Team.
Donor Reporting & Accounting:
- Track all in-country donor receipts to support accurate cash flow forecasting in line with BLM and MSI policies.
- Issue receipts for donor disbursements and maintain proper records in compliance with donor guidelines.
- Reconcile deferred income balances for projects, ensuring linkage to donor reports, and monitor foreign exchange gains/losses.
- Ensure liquidation of project expenditures in line with BLM/MSI policies, donor compliance, and best practices.
Training of Staff:
- Identify inventory management gaps and develop training programmes for staff.
- Conduct training for staff involved in mid-year and year-end stock counts.
- Support team leaders within service delivery channels to strengthen inventory management.
Other Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with the Senior Accountant, Warehouse Manager, and Channel Team Leaders to improve financial policies and procedures.
- Undertake any other reasonable duties to support the Finance Team, as requested.
Skills, Qualifications and Experience
- Part-qualified Accountant (ACCA, CIMA, or other recognized qualification), with at least 1-year post-qualification experience, and registered with ICAM.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting/Finance from a recognized university.
- High levels of numeracy and analytical skills.
- Attention to detail and accuracy.
- Strong communication skills (financial and narrative reporting).
- Ability to lead and motivate a small team.
- Fluency in written and spoken English (local languages desirable).
- Experience working on donor-funded projects.
- Experience in both management and statutory accounts.
- Experience in financial reporting for international projects and donors.
- Experience with financial systems (SUN Systems and Q&A preferred).
- Multi-currency reporting and accounting experience.
- Training and facilitation skills.
- Ability to work under pressure and manage multiple deadlines.
