Help a Child is a Christian international NGO specialized in community development with its headquarters in the Netherlands. Founded in 1968, Help a Child’s mission is to improve the wellbeing of children living in poverty and crisis through supportive communities. Currently, Help a Child is operating in Malawi, Kenya, Uganda, Burundi, South Sudan, DR Congo, Rwanda, Somalia and India. Help a Child has been operating in Malawi since 2009.

We have been working with our partners in various regions of Malawi to implement community development programs that promote the well-being of children by empowering their families and communities. In cooperation with local NGO partners, Help a Child Malawi improves the resilience of households by implementing the Child Centered Community Development (CCCD) program. In this holistic program, various thematic interventions are combined. They focus on early childhood development, education & child rights, as well as youth development and economic empowerment.

Position

Economic Empowerment Officer-Mwalweni Program

  • JOB PURPOSE Under the overall guidance and supervision of the Programs Manager and directly reporting to the Mwalweni Project Coordinator, the Economic empowerment Officer is responsible for the overall programmatic initiatives of economic empowerment of the Mwalweni Child Centred Community Development Program (CCCD). The role involves coordination, implementation and provision of support to the monitoring and evaluation of the economic empowerment initiatives. Under the guidance and supervision of the Programs Manager and with assistance of Project Coordinator, the incumbent will lead the trainings and capacity development initiatives of CCCD program on Self Help Groups, Integrated Farm Planning, revolving loan Fund and Agribusiness.  The incumbent will closely work with Monitoring & Evaluation Officer to conduct monitoring activities and contribute to the development of reports, and impact stories on Economic Empowerment programs.Key Expected Results
    • Design and implement economic empowerment programs and initiatives
    • Facilitate individuals and groups, to conduct market assessments, develop business plans, marketing, and other livelihood support activities.
    • Facilitate relationships and linkages between community groups and traders, private sector actors, trade cooperatives/unions, government stakeholders, MFIs, and others
    • Organize and facilitate community meetings with women and men’s livelihoods groups to strengthen the active participation of beneficiaries in economic development activities.
    • Provide technical support to farmer clubs and ensure development of vision plans and Sustainable Land Management Technologies.
    • Work with individual project participants, especially Self-Help Groups, on the economic recovery programs at each stage of their income-generating activities to ensure economic success and resilience.
    • Facilitate loan beneficiary selection, assessment and recovery
    • Conduct economic analysis and research to inform program development
    • Monitor and evaluate the progress and impact of economic empowerment programs
    • Coordinate with internal teams, local communities, and external stakeholders
    • Prepare and present reports on program status and results
    • Identify and pursue funding opportunities to support economic empowerment programs
    • Ensure compliance with organizational and program-specific guidelines
    • Stay updated with economic trends and global best practices

    Qualifications and Preferred Skills

    • University degree in the relevant field (e.g. social sciences, Agriculture, Economics or related discipline)
    • Minimum 3 years’ experience of working in the humanitarian and development sector; especially in the economic empowerment and livelihood sector.
    • Experience in working in livelihoods interventions like enterprise development, business management training, and women’s economic empowerment program.
    • Vast knowledge and experience in managing Self Help Groups and Agribusiness interventions
    • Experience of engagement with the private sector, market actors, and business support services providers.
    • Experience in working with NGOs – especially in project implementation, monitoring, and evaluation.
    • An understanding of gender, protection, and diversity issues in livelihoods and economic development programs.
    • Strong communication & interpersonal skills, community mobilization experience, and ability to work in teams.
    • Proven experience as an Economic Empowerment Program Officer or similar role
    • Strong understanding of economic development and community empowerment
    • Proficiency in data analysis and report writing
    • Strong communication and presentation skills
    • Ability to engage with diverse stakeholder groups
