The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH is a German federal enterprise. GIZ supports the Federal German Government in achieving its objectives in the field of international cooperation for sustainable development. GIZ operates in more than 130 countries around the globe. In Malawi, GIZ has been working for 60 years. The German international cooperation currently focuses on three priority areas: education, health and private sector development in rural areas. In addition, to our work on these areas, we also work on public financial management and economic management.

EnDev is a strategic, multi-donor partnership committed to achieving universal access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy by 2030, recognising it as essential for social and economic development. With over 15 years of experience, EnDev has facilitated energy access in more than 20 countries worldwide. EnDev is financed by The Netherlands, Norway, Germany, and Switzerland.

In 2012, EnDev through GIZ launched its operations in Malawi focusing on strengthening the market for improved cookstoves (ICS) and off-grid solar (OGS) technologies and services across the country. Over time, EnDev MW has established strong relationships with implementers and donors, resulting in a diverse portfolio of interventions tailored for various target groups.

Specific components under EnDev Malawi are funded by different sources: Off – grid Solar and Improved Cookstoves components are funded by The Netherlands, Norway, Switzerland and Germany. With special funds, The Netherlands’ Dutch Directorate General for International Cooperation (DGIS) supports the Demand Side Subsidies Component, while the Germany’s Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) funds the Energising Health component. Locally financed components include the Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet’s (GEAPP) Catalysing Distributed Renewable Energy Solutions for Agriculture in Malawi (Ag-Energy), Icelandic Embassy’s EnergICE, and EU’s Putting Energy to Work.

Each of EnDev-MW’s seven components is uniquely designed but systematically leverages synergies to maximise results and sustainability, complementing each other and integrating with other GIZ interventions. All EnDev MW components leverage a comprehensive local network and extensive experience gained since 2012.

Currently EnDev Malawi is looking for a Junior Advisor to be based in Lilongwe to support the work under the Energice Component.

Project BriefThe Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH is a German federal enterprise supporting the Federal German Government in sustainable development cooperation worldwide. GIZ has been operating in over 130 countries, with over 50 years of experience in Malawi. GIZ implements the Energising Development (EnDev) project in Malawi, which promotes sustainable access to modern energy services with a focus on the poor.

The program has delivered positive social, economic, and environmental impacts globally. EnDev is co-financed by the governments of the Netherlands, Germany, Norway, and Switzerland, with GIZ as the lead agency and additional cooperation from the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO).

Component FocusUnder funding from the Icelandic Embassy in Lilongwe, EnDev Malawi is implementing a district-focused energy access initiative in Mangochi and Nkhotakota. This includes:

  • Providing energy solutions for social institutions.
  • Promoting the Chitofu 3in1 fish processing technology.
  • Coordination with District Councils and representatives of line ministries, partners, and other relevant actors.
Your Taks:
  • Provide technical support and ensure effective delivery of services in Mangochi and Nkhotakota.
  • Translate project concepts into operational activities focusing on energy solutions and Chitofu 3in1.
  • Coordinate dialogue with local councils, line ministries, energy solution providers, and implementing partners.
  • Develop terms of reference and technical specifications for procurement and services.
  • Manage national and international experts, ensuring quality assurance.
  • Support monitoring and public relations efforts related to country measures.
  • Contribute to the development of innovative approaches and business development concepts.
Your Profile:
  • University degree in renewable energy, environment, electrical engineering, international cooperation, business administration, or a related field.
  • 1-2 years’ experience in development work and energy sector (preferably distributed solar for social institutions).
  • Skills or knowledge in private sector development, social marketing, behaviour change, and home economics are advantageous.
  • Experience with GIZ project management and procurement processes is an asset.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and teamwork abilities.
  • Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams) and business software.
  • Strong written and spoken English.
