The Company holds an 85% interest in the Kayelekera Uranium Project in Karonga, Malawi. Lotus is committed to generating value for its shareholders, customers, and communities where it operates. Lotus is undertaking refurbishment and maintenance of the process plant and other facilities in preparation for production to commence in the near future.

 SENIOR ENVIRONMENTAL OFFICER

Employment Type: Fixed Term (12 months)

POSITION SUMMARY

The Senior Environmental Officer will be responsible for supporting environment performance and management programs at Kayelekera Uranium Mine by supervising environmental monitoring activities, conducting data quality checks, data analysis, reporting, training employees and contractors on environmental safeguarding principles, natural resource conservation, support with liaising with stakeholders on site environmental performances and reporting.

REPORTING TO: Environment & Social Superintendent

 Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist with developing, implementing, and maintaining environmental management systems to ensure compliance with relevant laws and regulations.
  • Conducting environmental assessments and audits, including air and water quality monitoring, waste management, and soil contamination assessments.
  • Assist with developing and implementing environmental policies and procedures, including waste management plans and pollution prevention programs.
  • Monitoring and reporting on environmental performance, including tracking energy and water usage, waste reduction efforts and other environmental metrices.
  • Coordinating and collaborating with other departments and external stakeholders, such as regulatory agencies, to ensure compliance with environmental regulations and laws.
  • Educating and training employees, contractors, and other stakeholders on environmental issues and best practices.
  • Investigating and addressing environmental complaints, violations, and incidents.
  • Providing guidance and support for environmental impact assessments, permit applications, and other regulatory requirements.
  • Keeping updated with changes in environmental laws and regulations and ensuring that the organization complies with new regulations.
  • Managing and monitoring major projects’ environmental impacts and supporting project managers.
  • Participating in emergency response activities, such as spills and other environmental incidents.
  • Communicating regularly with management and other stakeholders as may be necessary, providing environmental performance and compliance updates.
  • Conducting data quality checks for data from different sources (laboratories).
  • Able to undertake other work activities as assigned by management.

Emergency Preparedness:

Assist in response to environmental incidents including communication, emergency management and reporting.

Qualifications, Experience & Competencies:

  • Bachelor’s degree in the field of Environmental Sciences.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in a busy environment.
  • Background knowledge of environmental monitoring in water quality, air quality and soil contamination.
  • Experience in data analysis (data quality checks & trends development) and reporting)
  • A valid driving license will be an advantage.
