Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is a non-profit, independent international humanitarian organization committed to delivering medical aid to populations facing crises, with a steadfast commitment to impartiality and without regard to race, religion, creed, or political affiliation. In Malawi, MSF works closely with the Ministry of Health and local communities, focusing on the Cervical Cancer project in Blantyre and Chiradzulu districts, as well as the CBO Project in Zalewa and Dedza districts. The CBO project run by MSF France supports two Community Based Organizations —one in Zalewa, Neno District, and another in Dedza District—to enhance sex workers’ access to Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) services.
MSFF is looking for its CBO Project:
MIDWIFE– 1 POSITION
Workplace : CBO Project Office in Blantyre with weekly visits alternating between Dedza and Zalewa
Type of contract : 6 months Fixed Term Contract with the possibility of extension
Start date : June 2025
Main purpose of the position
Provide obstetrical care to pregnant women and their babies, doing follow up before, during and after delivery, according to MSFobstetrical and reproductive health protocols, universal hygienic and newborn caring standards and under supervision of a specialist doctor, to ensure their health conditions and avoid post-delivery complications.
Accountabilities
- Ensuring the implementation and continuity of antenatal and postnatal care, family planning, obstetrical care (BEmONC 1 and CEmONC 2), neonatal and comprehensive abortion care, management of victims of sexual violence, reproductive tract infections and Fistula care in accordance with MSF Reproductive Core Package of Activities and reinforce the implementation of standardized protocols.
- Where PMTCT is implemented, ensuring implementation of the PMTCT protocol in the ANC/delivery and PNC consultations (pre counselling, test and post counselling
- Collaborating with the medical doctor and /or nurse in the management of Sexual Violence cases
- Assessing the feasibility for referral of pregnant women form the TBAs to the OPD/MCH for medical evaluation and/or complicated deliveries.
- Ensuring hygiene and sterilization criteria (including universal precautions) are met according to MSF specifications.
- Performing cleaning and minor maintenance for biomedical equipment used. Following the user manual and protocols and alert supervisor in case of malfunctioning.
- Guaranteeing a regular and ongoing supply of drugs and equipment required for maternity activities (including monitoring/consumption control/ordering of orders.
- Properly following up all newborn babies from delivery until discharge, informing mothers and relatives about importance of breast feeding, vaccination and possible complications resulting from harmful traditional practices.
- Ensuring patients’ right to privacy and confidentiality is respected
- Supervising that administrative procedures of admissions and hospitalizations comply with MSF protocols, as well as verify patients are properly informed and receive the documents required (birth certificate, vaccination card, etc.
- Participating in the organization of the ward in collaboration with other midwives and the maternity ward supervisor. Ensure transfer of relevant information to the next shift team (especially identifying risk cases).
Specific Accountabilities
- With support from MTL and CO, order drugs and clinic supplies according to planned activities
- Strictly follow dispensing protocols and accountability tools.
- Participate in Health Promotion activities whenever feasible to support the HPO in giving appropriate medical knowledge to CBO Members, Peers and Sex-workers
- Perform STI screening and treatment for sex workers
- Perform screening for HIV risk and PEP to the sex workers
- Perform screening for eligibility for PrEP administration including Injectable options to sex workers
- Provision of Family planning and contraceptive services to sex workers
- Ensure the access to post abortion care by Sex Workers who require the service
- Ensure appropriate linkage to treatment for clients who become eligible of care at the MOH facility and other relevant referral points such as HIV positive clients to ART services, HPV DNA PCR positive clients to VIA-Thermo-ablation, Hepatitis B positive clients to hepatitis B clinic.
- Coordinate with CBO members in managing Sexual and Gender Based Violence (SGBV) screening, care and referral.
- Follow appropriate documentation and reporting on all services offered by the clinic complying to both MSF and MOH requirements.
- Support the documentation and reporting of services carried out by the CBOs during mobile clinic to assist visibility of the CBO to the health system.
- Ensure ease of access to MOH facilities for sex workers who require referral to access services or to continue follow up of services required by sex workers.
