Job Summary

The Junior Research Assistant (Entomologist) will be part of a community-based trial in Chikwawa, Malawi, assessing the impact of ivermectin-treated cattle on malaria transmission. Responsibilities include conducting mosquito collections using specific traps, identifying mosquitoes to gather data on vector density, survival, and sporozoite rates, and assisting in analyzing host blood meals to understand the role of zoophilic vectors. The assistant will collaborate with veterinary officers, maintain accurate records of field and lab activities, contribute to data analysis, and ensure ethical research practices while aiding in report writing and scientific publications.

The ideal candidate should have a Bachelor’s or master’s degree in EntomologyBiology, Public Health, or a related field, with experience in field entomology, particularly in mosquito collection and identification. A solid understanding of malaria transmission dynamics and vector control methods is essential, along with strong analytical and data interpretation skills. The candidate should possess excellent written and verbal communication skills and can work collaboratively in a multicultural team environment. Previous experience in field-based entomological research and knowledge of the Chikwawa district and local languages are desirable

POSITION FUNCTION (PURPOSE):  In summary, why does the job exist?

This position is part of a community-based intervention trial assessing the potential of ivermectin, an endectocide administered to cattle, in reducing malaria transmission in Chikwawa district, southern Malawi. The Junior Research Assistant (Entomologist) will be responsible for conducting entomological research as part of the study to evaluate the impact of ivermectin-treated cattle on malaria transmission. The successful candidate will work closely with the research team to collect and analyze data on mosquito density, survival, and sporozoite rates.

Professional requirements

  1. Conduct mosquito collections using Prokopack aspirators and cattle-baited host decoy traps in selected villages.
  2. Morphologically identify collected mosquitoes and record data on vector density, survival, and sporozoite rates.
  3. Assist in the analysis of host blood meals to model the contribution of zoophilic vectors to malaria transmission.
  4. Maintain detailed and accurate records of field and laboratory activities.
  5. Collaborate with veterinary officers and other research team members to ensure the smooth execution of the study.
  6. Contribute to data analysis, report writing and scientific publications.
  7. Ensure adherence to ethical standards and guidelines in all research activities.
