The Malawi-Liverpool-Wellcome Research Programme (MLW) is an internationally recognized centre for research and training, funded by the Wellcome Trust in collaboration with our key partners, the Kamuzu University of Health Sciences (KuHes), Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM) and University of Liverpool (UoL) among others. Job Summary
The Lab Assistant will support the Research Assistant in performing qPCR and PCR-based assays to identify parasites and key genotypes, such as insecticide resistance markers, in mosquito and snail samples. Responsibilities include optimizing existing PCR assays, processing samples from research projects, and working primarily in the MLW laboratory while collaborating with colleagues from the Malaria Alert Centre and KUHES. Key tasks involve DNA extractions, performing real-time and conventional PCR, maintaining accurate sample storage and records, and adhering to MLW’s laboratory safety protocols and SOPs.
This role requires a BSc in biology or molecular biology and at least 2 years of experience in a research laboratory, including running DNA-based assays. Key skills include DNA extraction, PCR, QPCR, maintaining sample records, critical thinking, working independently, attention to detail, and proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
Responsibilities
POSITION FUNCTION (PURPOSE): In summary, why does the job exist?
The Lab Assistant will be needed to help the Research Assistant to perform qPCR and PCR-based assays for identifying parasites and important genotypes (e.g. insecticide resistance markers) within mosquito and snail samples. Together with the Research Assistant, he/she be responsible for developing and optimising existing PCR assays in the literature and may contribute to sample processing from additional student and research-funded projects. The post-holder will work primarily in the laboratory of MLW but will also liaise and work with colleagues at the Malaria Alert Centre and KUHES.

Professional requirements
- Perform DNA extractions on mosquito samples, DBS and snail samples.
- Perform both real-time and conventional PCR of the extracted samples.
- Maintain excellent sample storage and long-term records.
- Strict adherence to MLW laboratory safety protocols and SOPs.
Requirements

Education: The minimum level of education required to perform all the duties of the job to standard.
