Counselor Educator – Daily Worker Pool

Main purpose of the position

Perform counselling and/or education sessions to patients, following different medical and mental health MSF protocols and procedures, to improve their psychosocial condition.

Job Summary

Provide supportive group and individual counseling to patients with identified mental health needs and to all patients followed in the MSF project, regardless of stage of illness but based on patient need. The location of the counseling may be in OPD, IPD, MoH ward or Home-based care.

  1. Promote pro-active collaboration with other departments involved in the CC project to enhance the integration of mental health services in the project’s multi-disciplinary approach.
  2. Use screening tools planning and developing the appropriate therapeutic intervention based on each individual needs.
  3. Assess risk factors for poor mental health related quality of life among the cervical cancer survivors and follow-up on the evolution of patients’ psychosocial functioning.
  4. Maintain regular visits to provide mental health support for IPD patients and family members.
  5. Carry development and training on communication and basic counseling skills for staff.
  6. Update mental health service mapping, establish links with other key actors, and refer patients with psychiatric needs to external organizations to provide the best mental health care when applicable.
  7. Close collaboration with social worker and ability to cover for their position when needed.
  8. Ensure confidentiality of patients’ information according to MSF Protocols.
  9. Accurately monitor daily activity, integrating the necessary data into the activity monitoring tools. To guarantee proper follow-up: consistently complete medical records, book new appointments depending on the estimated need of the patient and perform phone follow-ups if needed.
  10. Attending weekly multidisciplinary meetings:
    • Providing constructive feedback of patient’s progress/recovery.
    • Discuss the necessity of re-referral to the doctor, or other disciplines when indicated (e.g., social team, therapeutic education, palliative care doctor/nurse).
    • Participating in discussion making of complex cases.
  11. Remaining flexible, cooperating within the multidisciplinary team, and on request of the managers, performing any other task needed to ensure the highest possible quality of care, good organization of the ward.
  12. Actively participate in the process of direct and indirect supervision with the functional referent in the field, to be supported in these activities and to improve these skills.

Requirements

 

Education At least a Diploma in Counseling, Social Work, Psychology or other similar Diploma/ Degree
Experience
  • A minimum of two(2) year’s experience working with MSF or other NGOs being essential.
  • Experience in oncology is desirable.
Knowledge Computer literacy 
Languages English and Chichewa essential
