St Columba CCAP is a Christ centered Church in Blantyre Synod with a population of about 4,000 members located in Njamba near Njamba Freedom Park in Blantyre.

The Church is looking for persons with relevant education background, experience and interpersonal skills to fill the above Position:

POSITION: ASSISTANT ACCOUNTANT
REPORTING TO : CHURCH ACCOUNTANT
GRADE : SS2

Job Summary

The Assistant Church Accountant assist the Church Accountant to record expenses, tracks the congregation’s revenue, and monitors spending of various church committees and ministries against the approved budget. The Assistant Church Accountant helps to deter, detect and report fraud, prepares budgets for the activities of the church, and helps to manage several bank accounts. S/he supports the accountant to keep accurate financial records.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Assists the Church Accountant in running the Church Accounts Office.
  2. Preparation of monthly tax returns such as Pension, PAYEE and Withholding Tax.
  3. Prepares audit schedules and supports the audit process.
  4. Ensures timely receipting and banking of cash
  5. Records and Processes transactions in the Accounting System and passes appropriate Journal Vouchers.
  6. Supports the Church Ministries and Committees to prepare budgets and budgetary controls.
  7. Conducts physical verification of Congregation Inventory and Assets.
  8. Prepares monthly Bank Reconciliation Statements by the 7th Day of the following month.
  9. Assists the Church Accountant to prepare monthly and quarterly management accounts.
  10. Checks Internal Requisitions for compliance with Procurement Procedures and Budget.
  11. Initiates Electronic Funds Transfers, cuts cheques and obtains appropriate signatures.
  12. Submits to the Congregation Treasurer and the Session Clerk a listing of all cheques written during the month.
  13. Supports the Church Accountant to prepare the Draft Fund Accountability Statements.
  14. Prepares monthly financial reports for committees and ministries or as requested.

Qualifications and Experience

  1. Minimum of Diploma in Accounting
  2. At least 5 years’ experience in a similar position
  3. Knowledge of Accounting Software
