The position is to be filled as soon as possible, with an initial contract duration of 7 months. There are very good prospects for an extension. Employment location will be Mangochi, Malawi. The position is paid according to local pay grade.

As a Deputy Head of Project, you will be responsible for the operative implementation of the project(s) and the appropriate use of funds in close coordination with the responsible Head of Project.

Your responsibilities

Manage projects and partnerships

In cooperation with the Programming Department and with the Partnerships Advisor, support the local partner NGOs in achieving project targets and impact, including:

  • Hold regular meetings with partners to discuss project progress, challenges, and planning.
  • Support procurement and post-procurement processes, e.g. upholding quality and accountability standards.
  • Support partners with capacity assessments and organizing capacity strengthening based on the capacity assessments. Support capacity strengthening mainly through a hands-on approach without overstepping or falling into micro-management.
  • Identify capacity-building needs that might not be captured formally by the capacity assessment and sharing. Communicate with the Partnership Advisor and Head of Programmes to find solutions.
  • Take part in regular joint monitoring of the projects with partners and with other relevant stakeholders.
  • Together with MEAL, develop and oversee the implementation of a MEAL plan and lead the roll-out of the FRCM.

Administrative tasks:

  • Is responsible for correctly and duly completing end-of-month accounts
  •  Examines and signs end-of-month accounts
  • Is responsible for examining inventory
  • Is responsible for project purchases according to the approved procurement budget
  • When purchases are made locally, the Deputy Head of  Project is responsible for observing internal or external procurement directives
  • Is responsible for controlling inventories
  • To ensure that project expenditure/burn rates are as per the donor-allocated amount
  • Prepares and/or examines distribution reports
  • Prepares status reports according to Welthungerhilfe standards or the rules of donors
  • Is responsible for bringing the project to an orderly conclusion

Your profile

  • Professional or formal qualification, ideally a bachelor’s degree in the following:  nutrition, food security, agriculture, agricultural economics, natural resources management.
  • Master’s degree is an added advantage
  • Over 5 years of professional experience
  • Coordination and organizational skills – even under a high workload
  • Proven experience working in partnership with civil society organizations and management of different stakeholders
  • Excellent spoken and written English
  • Able to report clearly, concisely
  • Good intercultural competencies and communication skills
  • Able to make decisions on assignments
  • Experienced with capacity strengthening and exchange of experiences with local civil society
  • Skilled in conflict resolution and diplomacy
