Seed Co Malawi Limited is inviting interested applicants to fill the above position.
Reporting to the Operations Executive, the Seed Storage Specialist shall play a critical role in ensuring the proper preservation, management, and utilization of seeds.
QUALIFICATIONS
Degree in Agriculture with specialisation in Seed Sciences, or equivalent qualifications.
EXPERIENCE
Minimum of 7 years’ experience as a Seed Storage Specialist in an entity that handles over 10,000mt of seeds per annum.
MAJOR COMPETENCIES
The candidates should have competencies in the following areas;
- Seed Biology and Physiology: Understanding of seed biology, including factors affecting seed viability, dormancy, and longevity, as well as physiological processes such as respiration and aging.
- Seed Handling and Storage Techniques: Proficiency in proper handling, storage, and preservation techniques to maintain seed quality, including knowledge of optimal storage conditions (temperature, humidity, and ventilation), packaging methods, and pest management strategies.
- Quality Control and Assurance: Ability to monitor and assess seed quality through regular inspections, germination tests, and other quality control measures to ensure adherence to industry standards and regulatory requirements.
- Inventory Management: Skills in inventory tracking, record-keeping, and database management to accurately catalogue and manage seed stocks, including batch numbers, expiration dates, and storage locations.
- Pest and Pathogen Management: Knowledge of common seed pests, pathogens, and contaminants, as well as integrated pest management strategies to prevent infestations and maintain seed health during storage.
- Equipment Operation and Maintenance: Competence in operating and maintaining seed storage equipment, such as climate-controlled chambers, refrigeration units, and monitoring devices, to ensure proper functionality and performance.
- Safety and Compliance: Understanding of safety protocols and regulations related to seed storage operations, including handling hazardous materials, managing chemical substances, and ensuring compliance with environmental and occupational health standards.
- Continuous Improvement: Commitment to ongoing learning and professional development to stay updated on advances in seed storage technology, best practices, and industry standards, and to continuously improve processes and procedures.
- Teamwork and Collaboration: Capacity to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams, including researchers, breeders, agronomists, and seed production specialists, to coordinate seed storage activities and support broader organizational goals.
