Vacancy – Workshop Manager

Location: Sande Sugar Estate, Chikwawa District, Southern Region, Malawi

Job Summary

We are seeking to employ an experienced and highly motivated Workshop Manager. The successful candidate will be reporting to the General Manager, To lead and manage the estate’s mechanical workshop, ensuring timely maintenance and repair of all vehicles, tractors, irrigation pumps, and related equipment. The Workshop Manager will supervise workshop staff, enforce safety standards, and ensure operational readiness of all machinery critical to sugarcane and other mechanical operations.

Reports to: General Manager

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the daily operations of the workshop, including scheduling, job allocation, and quality control.
  • Supervise and mentor a team of workshop staff, Asst. mechanic, fitter, and support staff.
  • Ensure timely maintenance and repair of the estate’s fleet, including tractors, pickups, trailers, and irrigation pumps.
  • Diagnose mechanical faults and recommend cost-effective repair solutions.
  • Maintain service records, job cards, and inventory of spare parts and tools.
  • Coordinate procurement of workshop supplies, lubricants, and spare parts.
  • Ensure preventive maintenance schedules are followed for all critical equipment.
  • Support repairs of center pivot systems, gearboxes, and irrigation infrastructure in collaboration with field teams.
  • Enforce workplace safety standards, proper use of PPE, and compliance with Malawi’s Occupational Safety, Health and Welfare Act.
  • Prepare periodic reports on workshop performance, costs, and equipment availability.
  • Liaise with management on capital repairs, equipment upgrades, and fleet planning.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and efficient workshop environment.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Motor Vehicle Mechanics Certificate Level 2 or 3 (Trade Test Grade 1) or
  • Diploma in Mechanical Engineering or
  • Minimum 5 years’ hands-on experience in mechanical repairs and workshop supervision.
  • Ability to work independently and with minimal supervision.
  • Willingness to work odd hours.
  • Be in possession of a valid driver’s license, minimum 5 years’ experience.

Key Skills

  • Proven experience managing a team in a fleet maintenance or agricultural workshop.
  • Strong background in tractor, motor vehicle, and irrigation pump systems is highly desirable.
  • Familiarity with rural estate operations and logistical challenges.
  • Strong leadership and labour management skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • No previous criminal records
