Family Health Services (FHS), has partnered with the government of Malawi through the Ministry of Health (MoH) in safeguarding the health of Malawians by using private sector approaches to reconfigure healthcare delivery– (i) through directly delivering innovative social and behaviour change communications, social marketing, and social franchising across a wide range of health areas including Reproductive Health, HIV, Malaria and water- borne disease prevention (ii) by playing a market facilitation role, approaching market challenges and opportunities with a system-wide lens thatunlocks a self-sustaining market with multiple players that can prioritize, adapt and ultimately thrive without external assistance and funds.

FHS continues to leverage capacities, learnings, and best practices to enhance activities in Malawi. To accomplish its mission, FHS is inviting applications from suitably qualified candidates to fill the vacant position of Wholesale Pharmacist.

Reporting to the Quality Assurance Advisor, the Wholesale Pharmacist will be responsible for ensuring that FHS adheres to PMRA pharmaceutical standards while maintaining a high standard of pharmaceutical products management. Specifically, she/he will be responsible for the following duties and responsibilities.

  1. Regulatory Compliance & Quality Assurance
    1. Put in place guidelines for quality assurance and control at each level of product movement for all FHS medicinal products (pharmaceuticals) complying with WHO and PMRA standards and orient all relevant staff of the same
    2. Help FHS in complying with all general applicable medicinal legal rules and regulations
    3. Resolve any quality issues from time to time to maintain the integrity, efficacy and effectiveness of all FHS pharmaceuticals
    4. Periodically inspect incoming shipments of FHS pharmaceuticals for conformance to specifications as per shipping documents, purchase order and samples supplied
    5. Oversee batch tracking and expiry monitoring to uphold product integrity.
    6. Submitting quality reports where necessary
  2. Sales, Storage & Distribution Oversight
    1. Supervise daily sale and distribution of pharmaceuticals to public and private health institutions (pharmacies, hospitals, clinics and medicine stores) in accordance with regulatory schedules.
    2. Ensure proper handling and transportation of pharmaceuticals per WHO GSDP (Good Storage & Distribution Practices) guidelines
    3. Periodically tour FHS pharmaceutical warehouses assessing pharmaceutical quality standards
  3. Inventory Management & Stock Control
    1. Monitor stock levels and implement strategies to prevent shortages and overstocking
    2. Oversee the adoption of advanced inventory management systems to optimize efficiency.
    3. Maintain accurate records of sales, stock movement and inventory audits
  4. Professional Advisory & Technical Support

Provide expert guidance in:

  1. Pharmaceutical procurement planning, ensuring quality standards are consistently upheld.
  2. Sales/Marketing teams and clients on drug formulations
  3. Regulatory Liaison & Compliance Management

Coordinate with the Pharmacy and Medicines Regulatory Authority (PMRA) in:

  1. Registration of new medicines and regulatory approvals.
  2. Retention of premises and medicines on the official register.
  3. Pharmacovigilance activities including adverse drug reaction monitoring.
  4. Disposal of expired or rejected pharmaceutical products.
  5. Product recall procedures to ensure patient safety.
  6. Import permit application procedures for legal pharmaceutical imports.
  7. Conducting quality tests on questionable imported pharmaceuticals to verify quality.
  8. Regulatory variations for modifications to registered products

Qualifications, Knowledge, Ability, and Skills.

  • A minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Pharmacy from a recognized institution, those with a Masters Degree will have an added advantage
  • Must be registered with PMRA
  • Must have a valid practicing certificate from PMRA
  • Must be a registered member of the Pharmaceutical Society of Malawi
  • A minimum of 5 year’s experience practicing as a pharmacist
  • Be a team player and of sober habits
  • Ability to understand different donor requirements
  • Good oral and written communication skills
  • Be emotionally intelligent and have the ability to interact with a diverse set of program teams
  • Computer skills in Microsoft word, excel and power point a must
