About Green Livelihoods (GL)

Green Livelihoods (GL) is a green enterprise and oil seeds value chain development and commercialization-focused NGO that champions inclusive and sustainable economic growth for smallholder farmers. Registered in Malawi in 2006, GL operates across the following thematic areas: Climate Smart Agriculture (CSA), Agribusiness Enterprise Development, Green Enterprise Development, and Environmental Sustainability.

GL primarily targets smallholder farmers, with a strong focus on marginalized youth and women.

Project Background

Green Livelihoods anticipates funding to implement a legume and oil seeds (sunflower and soya) commercialization project in Lilongwe District, targeting six Extension Planning Areas (EPAs).

The overall goal of the project is to improve the sustainable livelihoods of rural populations in Malawi by strengthening oil seed value chain commercialization and enhancing the resilience of smallholder farmers.

GL is therefore inviting applications from suitably qualified and experienced candidates to fill the following positions:

1. Project Officers (3 Positions)

Location: Lilongwe
Reporting to: Production Specialist

Role Summary

The Project Officers will support the planning, implementation, monitoring, and reporting of project activities. They will work closely with the Agribusiness Specialist, Production Specialist, community stakeholders, and partners to ensure effective delivery of project objectives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Implement project activities in line with approved work plans
  • Mobilize and support smallholder farmers and Farmer-Based Organizations (FBOs)
  • Provide technical support on production, CSA, post-harvest handling, and value addition
  • Facilitate training in agribusiness, financial literacy, and entrepreneurship
  • Strengthen farmer groups, cooperatives, and value chain platforms
  • Facilitate market linkages with buyers, processors, and financial institutions
  • Support business plan development and enterprise growth
  • Supervise lead farmers and community facilitators
  • Collect monitoring data and maintain beneficiary databases
  • Conduct field monitoring visits and document progress
  • Prepare weekly, monthly, and quarterly reports
  • Support accountability and grievance redress mechanisms
  • Coordinate with district stakeholders
  • Collaborate with BDS providers and support business scorecards

Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture, Agribusiness, Rural Development, Agricultural Economics, or related field
  • 5–7 years’ experience in agricultural/value chain projects
  • Experience with smallholder farmers, FBOs, or cooperatives
  • Experience in agribusiness development and market linkages
  • Knowledge of M&E systems and digital data tools (e.g., Kobo, ODK)
  • Strong reporting and documentation skills
  • Valid motorcycle riding license

2. Production Specialist (1 Position)

Location: Lilongwe
Reporting to: Agribusiness Specialist

Role Summary

The Production Specialist will provide technical leadership on agricultural production, focusing on improving productivity, quality, and sustainability in the soya and sunflower value chains. The role includes supervising Project Officers and ensuring quality field implementation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide technical leadership on crop production and agronomy
  • Promote improved seed varieties and Good Agricultural Practices (GAP)
  • Establish and supervise demonstration plots
  • Support pest and disease management
  • Promote climate smart agriculture practices
  • Supervise and mentor Project Officers
  • Lead farmer and staff trainings
  • Coordinate with government extension services and stakeholders
  • Track production indicators and support evaluations
  • Document best practices and lessons learned

Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Agronomy, Crop Science, or related field
  • Master’s degree is an added advantage
  • 5–7 years’ experience in agricultural production or extension
  • Demonstrated supervisory experience
  • Experience in oilseed/legume value chains preferred
  • Strong reporting and analytical skills
  • Valid motorcycle riding license

3. Agribusiness Specialist (1 Position)

Location: Lilongwe
Reporting to: Project Lead Consultant / Head of Programs

Role Summary

The Agribusiness Specialist will lead agribusiness development, commercialization, and market systems strengthening interventions. The role focuses on improving profitability, market access, and financial inclusion for farmer enterprises.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead agribusiness and commercialization strategies
  • Conduct value chain and market analyses
  • Develop business models and enterprise strategies
  • Facilitate market linkages and private sector engagement
  • Promote value addition and structured markets
  • Support access to finance and financial literacy
  • Mentor FBOs and cooperatives
  • Track agribusiness performance indicators
  • Support business training and BDS collaboration
  • Build partnerships with financial institutions and private sector
  • Contribute to reporting and knowledge management

Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Agribusiness, Agricultural Economics, or related field
  • Master’s degree is an added advantage
  • 5–7 years’ experience in agribusiness or value chain development
  • Experience with farmer organizations and SMEs
  • Experience in market linkages and rural finance
  • Strong analytical, facilitation, and reporting skills
