POSITION:  1. Village Partnership Program Coordinator                                                                                                                           

Children of the Nations is a duly registered NGO in Malawi with a mission to raise children who transform Nations. It collaborates with nationals to provide Christ-centered care for orphaned and destitute children, enabling them to create a positive and lasting change in their nations.                                                                                                                                                                                      In order to fulfil its vision effectively and efficiently, an opportunity has risen to engage qualified person to fill a position of Village Partnership Program Coordinator tenable at Children of the Nations-COTN Malawi Head Office in Lilongwe. Applications are invited from suitable and interested candidates to fill the position on contractual basis.

Key Responsibility                                                                                                                                                                                    To collaborate with the Country Director in planning, coordinating, supporting, and implementing operations of Village Partnership Program activities, VPP SOS, policies, and procedures of the programs.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and support implementation of all existing orphan support program activities and community projects in VPP
  • Initiate, Plan and implement new children’s and community activities and projects in VPP, including coming up of projects proposals for them
  • Supervise and monitor activities in VPP centers and directly oversee and support the involvement of VPP Facilitators and other VPP staff and volunteers
  • Coordinate and support children’s home visitation in VPP and ensure records, maintenance and good security of children’s data.
  • Strengthen community partnerships and encourage community participation towards VPP activities, including children’s involvement in VPP activities
  • Collaborate with other departments for administration of excellent holistic care services of VPP children
  • Increase sustainability and growth of VPP through fundraising, partnerships and development of funding project proposals to COTNI and other funding agencies
  • Ensure provision of necessary and relevant guidance, counselling, and mentorship to VPP children
  • Ensure participation and involvement in management meetings for the growth of VPP and COTN in general
  • Develop yearly Annual Operation Plan and budget and Quarterly plan and ensure implementation of the same
  • Support hosting and implementation of Venture team activities in VPP in liaison with Venture Officer
  • Overseeing the training and implementation of child safeguarding policies and procedures in Village Partnership Program
  • Building and maintaining relationships with relevant external organizations to ensure effective child support collaboration and sharing of experiences
  • Uphold and support implementation of VPP SOS in general admission, admission procedures, general child care and other relevant standards
  • Write and submit reports to the Country Director

Qualifications, Experience, Skills and Competences                                                                                         

  • Degree in Managing Rural and Community Development or its relevant with not less than 5 years’ experience of working in community led child care support environment
  • Counselling and mentorship skills
  • Excellent communication skills and able to effectively model the best leadership practices
  • Skills and ability to develop program plans and budgets
  • Computer literate and proficient in Microsoft Office
  • Experience and ability to work in a flexible and cross-cultural environment and ability to work with children and youths from troubled backgrounds
  • Emotionally stable, strategically mature and able to hold intellectual deliberations
  • Ability and experience in implementing child safeguarding and protection policies
  • Ability to display team work spirit and good coordination skills
  • A born-again Christian who demonstrates a vibrant and authentic faith in Jesus Christ.
  1. Primary Teacher (Based at Big Johns Primary School (2 Posts)

Position Summary                                                                                                                                                                                      To collaborate with COTN Malawi Education Coordinator and Primary Head Teacher to provide quality teaching and learning services to learners in COTN Primary School and implement COTN national education standards.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Planning and preparing appropriate lessons in accordance with school policy.
  • Teaching, assessing, recording and reporting progress of learners to parents and stakeholders according to school policy.
  • Providing guidance and advice to learners on education and social matters and keeping record of the same.
  • Maintaining good order, promoting self-discipline among pupils and taking reasonable care for their safety and well-being. Playing a full role in the wider life of the school, contributing actively to the extra-curricular of the program.
  • Maintaining good order and promoting self-disciplined among pupils and taking reasonable care for their safety and well-being.
  • Taking responsibility of maintenance of accurate register of pupils’ attendance of the school.
  • Understanding COTN policies and putting into practice everything that is abide.

Qualifications, Experience, Skills and Competences                                                                                                                             

  • Must be a holder of Primary School Teaching Certificate.
  • Excellent communication skills, ability to effectively capture and convey corporate ideas.
  • Ability to work in a flexible and cross-cultural environment.
  • Knowledge and experience on implementing child protection policy and working with Children from troubled backgrounds.
  • Mature Christian, a person with high integrity who has the potential to provide spiritual counselling and parental advice when need be.
  • Registered with Teachers Council of Malawi.
  • Should be conversant with National Reading Program (NRP)

 Position 3: Director of Finance and Administration (1post)

Position summary:                                                                                                                                                               Primary Function: Work with COTN national staff to establish strategy, procedure and organizational guidelines to implement finance and administration standards and procedures for staff and all stakeholders.

Secondary Function:  Liaison with internal and external stakeholders to empower national staff through training, meetings, workshops and seminars to implement finance and administration initiatives in all COTN centers in Malawi.

Main duties and responsibilities

  • Managing the Finance Department and providing leadership, guidance and direction in planning and execution of all financial activities.
  • Provision of ongoing financial and administrative support to COTN and its programmes, as well as to the Board of Trustees, to ensure that COTN is able to implement its work plans;
  • Provision of necessary support policies, procedures and donor guidelines in the management, financial, administrative and human resource areas are properly implemented and in a timely manner;
  • Communicating with and answering queries raised by the Board of trustees, management and donors concerning financial and administrative matters;
  • Obtaining monthly funding requirements from various COTN departments and making reasonable monthly cash requirement forecasts to ensure the coordinating activities of COTN are not slowed down due to inadequate funding in the accounts maintained by COTN;
  • Developing, implementing and maintaining a sound accounting and financial management and control systems that ensures proper records and controls resulting in accuracy and reliability of financial information;
  • Production of annual accounts and providing technical assistance to the external auditors;
  • Production of accurate monthly, quarterly and annual financial management accounts in compliance with the generally accepted accounting practices (GAAPs) for use in decision-making by management;
  • Coordinating the data processing function and maintaining an efficient computerized accounting system;
  • Implementing expansion of COTN revenue base through facilitation of project proposal writing for relevant grants to supplement Head Office funds
  • Maintenance of the fixed asset register and physically checking their existence ensuring that the assets are safe and used only for the furtherance of the objectives of the organization;
  • Active participation in management and board meetings, as well as weekly meetings with the Country Director or his/her appointee.
  • Providing continuous institutional and on-the-job training to ensure that accounting personnel maintain leading edge skills at all times.

Skills, qualifications and experience

  • Excellent communication skills, able to effectively capture and convey corporate ideas
  • Experience and ability to work in a flexible and cross-cultural environment
  • Post graduate degree in finance and accounting, business administration or strategic management, ACCA/CIMA, Bachelor’s degree in Accounting/Business Administration with more than 7 years’ experience working in a senior management position.  A member of ACCA, CIMA and ICAM
  • Experience working with Children from troubled backgrounds will be an added advantage.
  • Knowledge and experience in implementing Child Safeguarding/protection policies
  • Mature born-again Christian who has the potential to provide spiritual counselling and parental advice when need be.
  • Knowledge in the use of Quick Books or any accounting package as well as Microsoft word, Excel etc.
