ACADEMIC VACANCIES
Mzuzu University (MZUNI) is a Public University established by the Laws of Malawi Cap 30:09 (Mzuzu University Act No. 12 of 1997). Currently, the University has six faculties of Education; Environmental Sciences; Health Sciences; Tourism, Hospitality and Management; Science, Technology and Innovation; and Humanities and Social Sciences. It is a dual mode University offering its courses through face-to-face and Open, Distance and e-Learning (ODeL) teaching and learning modes. It also offers some of its programmes on block, weekend and vacation release.
The University invites applications from suitably qualified candidates to fill the following vacant positions tenable in the following faculties:
1. Faculty of Science, Technology and Innovation (Department of Biological Sciences):
a. Professor / Associate Professor / Senior Lecturer / Lecturer in Medical Parasitology
Applicants must have a PhD or Master’s Degree in Medical Parasitology or Medical Microbiology (with a bias in Protozoology or Helminthology) plus a Bachelor’s Degree in either of the following: Biomedical Sciences, Medical Laboratory Sciences, Biological Sciences or Parasitology and Disease Vector Control or related field obtained from a reputable and accredited institution of higher learning. Applicants should submit academic transcripts in addition to copies of certificates.
b. Professor / Associate Professor / Senior Lecturer / Lecturer in Medical Entomology
Applicants must have a PhD or Master’s Degree in Vector Biology with a bias in Medical Entomology or Insecticides Resistance plus a Bachelor’s Degree in either of the following: Biological Sciences, Medical Entomology, Vector Biology or Parasitology and Disease Vector Control or related field obtained from a reputable and accredited institution of higher learning. Applicants should submit academic transcripts in addition to copies of certificates.
c. Professor / Associate Professor / Senior Lecturer / Lecturer in Human Anatomy and Physiology
Applicants must have a PhD or Master’s Degree in Human Anatomy and Physiology plus a Bachelor’s Degree in either of the following: Biological Sciences, Zoology, Veterinary Medicine, Human Medicine or Parasitology and Disease Vector Control or related field obtained from a reputable and accredited institution of higher learning. Preference will be given to applicants with a teaching experience in the following subjects: Veterinary Parasitology, Pharmacology, General Pathology and Hematology. Applicants should submit academic transcripts in addition to copies of certificates.
2. Faculty of Health Sciences (Department of Optometry)
a. Professor/Associate Professor/Senior Lecturer / Lecturer / Staff Associate in Optometry
Candidates must have a PhD or Master’s degree in Optometry or related fields plus a relevant bachelor’s degree with at least Upper Second Class or Credit obtained from a reputable and accredited institution of higher learning. Candidates with a bachelor’s degree only will be considered for the position of Staff Associate. Applicants should submit academic transcripts in addition to copies of certificates.
3. Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences (Department of Governance, Peace and Security Studies)
a. Professor/Associate Professor/Senior Lecturer/Lecturer in International Relations and Diplomacy
Candidates must have a PhD or Master’s Degree in International Relations, Diplomatic Studies, International Studies and Political Science, plus a relevant Bachelor’s degree in the Humanities and Social Sciences, with at least upper second class or credit obtained from a reputable and accredited institution of higher learning. Candidates should have a solid background in at least three of the following areas: International Relations theory, Diplomatic Studies, Foreign Policy Analysis, Comparative Politics, International Political Economy, and Political Philosophy.
b. Professor/Associate Professor/Senior Lecturer /Lecturer in Development Studies
Candidates must have a PhD or Master’s Degree in Development Studies, plus a relevant Bachelor’s degree in the Humanities and Social Sciences, with at least upper second class or credit obtained from a reputable and accredited institution of higher learning. Candidates should have a solid background in at least three of the following areas: Development Studies, Economics, Sociology, Public Administration, Public Policy, and Anthropology.
c. Professor / Associate Professor / Senior Lecturer / Lecturer in Theology and Religious Studies
Candidates must have a PhD or Master’s Degree in Theology and Religious Studies or its equivalent, plus a relevant Bachelor’s degree in Theology and Religious Studies or its equivalent, with at least upper second class or credit obtained from an accredited institution of higher learning. Candidates should have a solid background in at least two of the following areas: Biblical languages, Systematic Theology, Religion and Gender and Theology and Development. Candidates, who can teach biblical languages (Hebrew and Greek) both at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, will have an added advantage.
For all the positions, applicants should address their suitability to meet the following requirements:
a. Experience
Applicants with at least two (2) years of teaching experience at tertiary level in the subject area will have an added advantage.
b. Duties and Responsibilities
- To teach and assess undergraduate and postgraduate courses;
- To develop and teach new courses, including postgraduate courses, as may be required;
- To supervise undergraduate and postgraduate projects, including research;
- To actively participate in scholarly activities such as research and publication;
- To undertake outreach activities;
- To actively participate in resource mobilization activities;
- To serve on University Committees to which they may be appointed; and
- To undertake any other reasonable duties as required and assigned by their Head of Department, Dean of Faculty or Management.
c. Attributes and Competencies
- Ability to work as a member of a team;
- Progressive knowledge in the subject areas for those applying for Lecturer position and above;
- Demonstrable commitment to academic excellence in teaching andresearch;
- Evidence of scholarly publications in peer-reviewed sources for candidates applying for the position of at least Senior Lecturer grade;
- Good communication skills; and
- Ability to work under pressure and to meet given deadlines.
