Radiation Technician

Lotus Africa seeks to recruit a suitably qualified and motivated individual to the post of Radiation Technician at Kayelekera Uranium Mine in Karonga.

Reporting to the SHR Supervisor, the role involves supporting the SHR Supervisor to ensure the successful compliance to the Company’s Radiation Plan.

Health Safety & Radiation:

All employees must ensure total compliance to all Company’s safety policies and relevant site-specific safety policies (as amended from time to time) including, without limitation, requirements to wear safety equipment whilst in areas requiring such equipment. assisting with grade control and ore delineation under the Senior Mine Geologists’ supervision. This entry-level position provides practical training in the field of geology,
sampling procedures, geological software and radiation safety while emphasizing data accuracy, safety and teamwork.

Environment:
All employees must ensure that operations are conducted in such a manner as will minimise any effects on the natural environment in the vicinity of the site, or sites where the work activities are being performed. Additionally, compliance with the Company’s instructions from time to time in matters of the environment, domestic animals, firearms, hazardous materials and containment of slurry in appropriate earthworks and usage of local water supplies, must be always adhered to.

Main responsibilities

  • Providing assistance and technical advice to all departments regarding aspects of Radiation Management.
  • Under the direction of the SHR Supervisor, conduct radiation monitoring programs within the plant.
  • Ensuring the accurate calibration of all technical equipment
  • Providing assistance with the testing and decontamination for the transportation of radioactive materials.
  • Maintaining registers for all radioactive sources and irradiating apparatus.
  • Determining and monitoring radiation levels to designated and no designated workers.
  • Carry out other duties as required or directed by the SHR Supervisor
  • Give inductions to employees, visitors and contractors with regards to exposure of radiation.
  • Inspect the shipment drums and log the data, accordingly, communicate data summary for shipment officials to obtain transportation clearance.
  • Escorting of the Uranium transportation.

Requirements and qualifications

Qualifications/Experience:

  • Diploma in Chemistry or Physics
  • High school diploma
  • Minimum of 1 years’ experience working in a similar role
  • Working knowledge of local regulations and legislation regarding management of radioactive minerals

  • Working knowledge of International Atomic Energy Regulation Authority (AERA)
  • Working knowledge of International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP)
