Organization Description

CARVE Africa (Creating Accessibility for Reproductive Values and Education) is a women-led Malawian NGO dedicated to advancing access to accurate, evidence-based knowledge on Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) and Menstrual Health and Hygiene (MHH). Our holistic, community-powered approach is inclusive of all genders and age groups and rooted in local leadership and trust.

Job Summary

The MEAL Coordinator will be responsible for overall monitoring, evaluation, accountability, and learning activities for the organization. This includes developing and utilizing an organizational MEAL framework to track organizational reach and impact, as well as leading the design and implementation of project-specific MEAL frameworks. The successful candidate will have experience designing robust systems, managing data collection and analysis, report writing, and working with project staff to harness learning for program improvement. The MEAL Coordinator will report to the Deputy Director and coordinate closely with the Program Manager and field-based staff in the program districts and the team to ensure that programs are effective, efficient, and responsive to the needs of the target population.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. MEAL Framework Development:
    • Develop an organization-wide MEAL framework aligned with CARVE Africa’s strategic goals and program objectives that captures our reach and impact and facilitates reporting.
    • Participate in project design and start-up workshops to lead the development of project-specific MEAL systems.
    • Define clear indicators, data collection tools, and analysis plans for the CARVE Africa MEAL framework and individual project frameworks.
    • Develop and manage a system for capturing and managing program data, including baseline data collection.
  2. Project Monitoring, Baselines, and Evaluations:
    • Develop and implement data collection tools (surveys, questionnaires, checklists) to collect quantitative and qualitative data in line with donor requirements and CARVE standards.
    • Develop and oversee data collection activities, ensuring data quality, timeliness, and consistency. This includes the management of survey teams/enumerators.
    • Clean, analyze, and interpret data to inform program performance and impact.
    • Utilize appropriate data analysis software and tools.
    • Conduct regular program monitoring to track progress toward objectives and identify challenges.
    • Develop and implement baseline and evaluation plans to assess program effectiveness and impact and changes in knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors among beneficiaries.
    • Document and share lessons learned from monitoring and evaluation activities.
  3. Learning and Adaptation:
    • Analyze program data to identify trends, patterns, and areas for improvement.
    • Generate actionable insights and recommendations based on data analysis.
    • Facilitate knowledge sharing and learning within the organization.
    • Support program adaptation based on emerging evidence and feedback.
  4. Reporting:
    • Prepare regular MEAL reports for internal and external stakeholders, including donors.
    • Develop clear and concise reports that effectively communicate program performance and impact.
    • Utilize data visualization techniques to present findings compellingly.
  5. Capacity Building:
    • Build the capacity of program staff in MEAL principles and practices.
    • Provide training and support on data collection, analysis, and utilization.
    • Foster a culture of learning and evidence-based decision-making.
  6. Strategic Growth
    • Provide data-driven insights to inform long-term organizational goals.
    • Analyze program performance to identify growth opportunities.
    • Contribute to strategy sessions, aligning MEAL findings with broader objectives.

 Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in statistics, economics, social sciences, or a related field; Master’s preferred
  • At least 5 years of experience in a similar position within an NGO
  • Excellent data collection, analysis, and report writing and communication skills
  • Experience in designing and implementing surveys and data collection tools
  • Knowledge of MHH and SRHR issues is an advantage
  • Must be a self-starter, able to initiate programs and create MEAL structures
  • Our office maintains a fun but hard working vibe; a sense of humor is a must
  • Proficiency in Chichewa and English
