
Malawi Environment Protection Authority (MEPA)
The Malawi Environment Protection Authority (MEPA) was established by Section 7(1) of the Environment Management Act (EMA) of 2017 as the principal agency for the protection and management of the environment and sustainable utilization of natural resources. MEPA coordinates, monitors, supervises and consults with all relevant stakeholders on all activities relating to the utilization and management of the environment and natural resources.
MEPA is inviting applications from suitable, highly qualified, experienced and motivated candidates to fill the following vacancies tenable at its Secretariat at MEPA House, Nkhalango Street, City Centre, Lilongwe:
A. DIRECTORATE OF ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENTS AND INSPECTION
Job Title: Inspection and Enforcement Officer
Grade: ME5
Reporting to: Senior Inspection and Enforcement Officer
PURPOSE, ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Purpose of the Job
To provide environmental inspection and enforcement services.
Key Roles and Responsibilities
- Conduct regular and ad hock field inspections of industrial sites, development projects, waste management facilities, and other regulated entities.
- Verify compliance with conditions in the Environmental Impact Assessment (ESIA) approvals, Environmental Management Plans (EMPs) and applicable environmental laws and regulations.
- Collect information on environmental issues for use in pollution control.
- Collect any samples of pollutants or polluted material for testing, analysis or evidence.
- Conduct environmental inspection to check compliance with environmental standards and legislation.
- Prepare environmental inspection reports.
- Support outreach and sensitization efforts on environmental compliance.
- Participate in meetings and workshops on waste management and pollution control matters.
- Perform any other duties as may be assigned by management.
JOB SPECIFICATIONS AND PERFORMANCE FACTORS
Qualifications and Experience
- A BSc. in Environmental Sciences, or Natural Resources Management.
- At least three (3) years of experience in environmental inspections and enforcement after completing a first degree.
