Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA)

1.0 INTRODUCTION
The Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) is a statutory body established under the Communications Act (Cap. 68:01 of the Laws of Malawi) to regulate the provision of services in the communications sector of Malawi, comprising telecommunications, posts and broadcasting. Under the Communications Act, MACRA is mandated to regulate and monitor the provision of communications services and ensure that, as far as it is practicable, reliable and affordable communications services are provided throughout Malawi and are sufficient to meet the demand for such services in accordance with the principles of transparency, certainty, market orientation, efficiency, and consumer satisfaction. The Vision of MACRA is to be a world-class regulator ensuring universal access to ICT services.

To fulfil its mandate effectively and efficiently with strategic leadership and management, an opportunity has arisen within MACRA to fill various vacant position. The positions are highly demanding and require persons who have demonstrable capacity to initiate innovations geared at making MACRA a rejuvenated, vibrant and competitive Authority. INTERNSHIP POSITIONS

In line with its quest for skills development and upliftment within the communication sector, MACRA has embarked on a program to create opportunities for internship and attachment for graduates to get practical work experience which will complement their competence and employability. The Authority, therefore, is looking for persons to be considered for internship in the Postal department. The details of the internship vacancies are as follows:

GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEM (GIS) OFFICER (4 POSITIONS)

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Gather geographic data related to addresses, infrastructure, and other relevant information for the development and maintenance of the national addressing system.
  2. Utilize GIS tools to create maps, conduct spatial analysis, and generate reports to support decision-making and planning for the national addressing system.
  3. Work with various teams and stakeholders to integrate GIS data into the national addressing system.
  4. Verify the accuracy of geographic data, address information, and mapping outputs to ensure the reliability and precision of the national addressing system.
  5. Conduct field surveys and data collection activities to validate and supplement GIS information for improved accuracy.
  6. Ensure adherence to regulatory standards and guidelines governing GIS data and addressing systems within Malawi.

Requisite Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree in Geographical Information Systems (GIS), Land Surveying or Physical Planning.

Key competencies and attributes
i. An in-depth knowledge in SQL Database.
ii. Able to use GIS software or QGIS.
iii. Know how to use GPS.
iv. Ability to work as part of a team.

DURATION OF INTERNSHIP
The interns shall be engaged on a 1-year contract with a possible extension depending on the needs in the department.
