The Maryland Global Initiatives Corporation (MGIC) is a nonprofit affiliate of the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) through which UMB administers its international programs. MGIC currently has offices in eight countries in sub-Saharan Africa, including Botswana, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Nigeria, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Zambia. MGIC’s operations support the research and clinical programs of the School of Medicine, Institute of Human Virology’s Center for International Health, Education and Biosecurity (CIHEB).

Position Description

Under the guidance and supervision of the Director of Finance and Administration, the Finance Officer will be responsible for assisting with preparing accurate and timely financial statements and documents related to the MGIC office operations and the donor funded projects. He/She will report directly to the Director of Finance.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Prepares invoices for payments
  • Prepares travel advance and travel reimbursement documentation.
  • Files payments and other necessary documents in an orderly filing system.
  • Enter transactions into Unit 4 ERP system or related accounting software.
  • Scans monthly documentation to Home Office.
  • Perform balance sheet, revenue, expense, and payroll account reconciliations on a monthly basis and more frequently as requested by the Senior Accountant
  • Able to understand and apply international & domestic policies
  • Review banking activity and reconciling monthly reports
  • Assists senior accountant with monthly and yearly closing
  • Assists senior accountant to prepare for any audits and financial reviews.
  • Run reports as requested by Finance Manager
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in finance and accounting, or other related field.
  • Advanced degree in an applicable field preferred.
  • CPA Preferred

Experience, Knowledge, and Skills

  • At least 2 years of experience in Accounting and Financial management.
  • Experience with QuickBooks accounting software or other accounting software
  • At least 2 years of experience in a setting where accrual accounting is used.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing.
  • Experience with USAID/CDC program finances (preferred) or similar work for other donors/U.S. Government agencies
  • Proven knowledge of standard software including Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, Power Point
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively under pressure and to organize and prioritize competing demands
  • Ability to work effectively in a team setting and independently.
  • Fluency in English (speaking, reading, and writing).
