JOB DESCRIPTION

Field Engineer / Technician – RAN & Microwave (Nokia)
Department: Network Deployment & Operations
Reports To: Project Manager / Senior Field Engineer / Technical Lead
Location: Field-Based (Nationwide – Malawi)
Employment Type: Contract / Full-Time (Project Based)

1. Position Purpose

The Field Engineer / Technician is responsible for supporting Radio Access Network (RAN) and
Microwave transmission projects, including network modernisation, upgrades, and new cell site
active equipment installations. The role involves hands-on field work covering installation,
integration support, commissioning assistance, testing, and troubleshooting of Nokia RAN and
Microwave equipment, ensuring work is completed safely, on time, and to required quality
standards.

2. Key Duties and Responsibilities

2.1 RAN & Active Equipment Installation
– Install, upgrade, and modernise Nokia RAN equipment (BBU, RRU, antennas, feeders)
– Support new cell site active installations and modernisation swaps
– Execute site expansions and technology overlays (2G/3G/4G/LTE, 5G-ready)
– Perform cable management, labelling, and site housekeeping

2.2 Microwave & Transmission Works
– Install and commission microwave radio links
– Perform LOS verification, antenna alignment, RSSI and BER checks
– Support microwave upgrades and fault rectification
– Verify grounding and lightning protection

2.3 Integration, Commissioning & Testing Support
– Support integration teams during power-on and alarm checks
– Assist with Site Acceptance Testing (SAT/PAT)
– Support troubleshooting during rollout and cutover

2.4 Power & Electrical Works
– Connect and verify DC power systems (rectifiers, batteries, DC distribution)
– Ensure correct polarity, earthing, and cable sizing
– Interface with AC power systems, generators, and ATS

2.5 Health, Safety & Working at Heights
– Perform tower climbing and rooftop works in compliance with HSE regulations
– Apply rope rigging, fall arrest systems, and safe working practices
– Participate in basic rescue activities where required

2.6 Quality Assurance & Documentation
– Ensure installations meet Nokia and project standards
– Complete installation checklists, test reports, as-built documentation
– Submit daily progress reports (DPRs)

3. Minimum Qualifications

Diploma or Degree in Electrical Engineering, Telecommunications Engineering, Electronics
Engineering, or a closely related technical field.

4. Work Experience

Minimum 2 years hands-on experience in telecom field operations, including RAN rollout or
modernisation projects and microwave installation or support activities.

5. Technical Competencies

Essential:
– Understanding of RAN architecture and microwave transmission basics
– Ability to read site drawings and installation manuals

Added Advantage:
– Experience with Nokia equipment
– Basic RF and fibre handling knowledge

6. Safety & Certifications (Added Advantage)

– Rope rigging and tower climbing
– Working at Heights certification
– Fall Arrest certification
– Basic rescue / tower rescue training
– First Aid certification

7. Other Requirements

– Valid Malawi driving licence (added advantage)
– Willingness to travel nationwide and work in remote areas
– Physically fit for field and tower work
