Lotus will be undertaking refurbishment and maintenance of the process plant and other facilities in preparation for production to commence in the near future.

 ENVIRONMENTAL & SOCIAL SUPERINTENDENT

 JOB PURPOSE

The purpose of this role is to ensure the effective management of site Environmental and Social risks and obligations, and to maintain a sustainable system of work to minimize any adverse Environmental or Social impact from the operations.

The Environmental and Social Superintendent is responsible for ensuring the effective implementation and management of environmental and social controls at the Kayelekera Uranium Mine. The role focuses on maintaining compliance with environmental and social regulations, minimizing environmental and community impacts, and promoting sustainable mining practices. The incumbent will lead environmental risk assessments, oversee radiation monitoring, implement control measures, and engage with community stakeholders to foster positive relationships. Additionally, the position plays a critical role in fostering environmental and social awareness among site personnel and engaging with regulatory and community stakeholders.

The Environmental and Social Superintendent is responsible for overseeing and ensuring the implementation of the Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) and Community Development Agreement (CDA) controls and actions at the Kayelekera Uranium Mine. The role ensures compliance with all environmental and social regulations, company policies, and industry best practices. The incumbent will be responsible for environmental and social risk assessment, monitoring, and ensuring that all personnel understand their responsibilities.

 REPORTING TO THE GENERAL MANAGER, KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS FOR THE POSITION INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:

 Regulatory Compliance and ESIA Implementation

  • Ensure that all Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) controls are effectively implemented and maintained.
  • Monitor compliance with environmental permits, licenses, and legal requirements and report any noncompliance issues. o Maintain up-to-date knowledge of environmental laws and regulations, ensuring the mine remains compliant with all applicable legislation.
  • Liaise with government authorities, environmental agencies, and stakeholders regarding environmental matters.

 Environmental Risk Management and Monitoring

  • Regularly review environmental risk levels to assess the need for escalation or reassessment of controls.
  • Ensure all required environmental monitoring (e.g., air, water, soil, noise, biodiversity, and radiation) is conducted as per the Environmental Management Plan (EMP).
  • Assess the impact of radiation on the environment and ensure monitoring is conducted at the required frequency.o Implement appropriate control measures when environmental or radiation risks escalate beyond acceptable levels.
  • Investigate environmental incidents and implement corrective and preventative measures.

 Environmental and Social Management System (ESMS) Development and Implementation

  •  Establish, implement, and maintain a site-wide Environmental and Social Management System (ESMS) in line with ESIA and Industry best practice standards.
  • Develop and maintain environmental policies, procedures, and guidelines for site personnel.
  • Conduct internal environmental and social audits and facilitate external audits to ensure continuous improvement.o Prepare environmental and social/community relations reports for internal and external stakeholders, including regulatory bodies.
  • Management and reporting of localization

 Training and Awareness

  • Ensure all personnel and contractors are aware of site-specific environmental risks, their responsibilities, and applicable license conditions.
  • Conduct environmental training programs and awareness campaigns to promote a culture of environmental responsibility.
  • Provide technical guidance and support to operational teams regarding environmental best practices.
  • Provide the highest level of professional leadership and technical support to the Human Resources team to ensure the creation of a working environment which is conducive to employees gaining new skills and achieving their full potential by the development and implementation of effective training and mentoring programs.

 Stakeholder and Community Engagement

  • Work closely with community relations teams to ensure socio-environmental concerns are addressed.
  • Engage with local communities, NGOs, and governmental bodies on environmental matters. o Develop and support initiatives for biodiversity conservation, waste management, and sustainable resource use.
  • Develop and implement community engagement programs to build and maintain positive relationships with local communities.
  • Address community concerns related to environmental and social impacts and develop strategies to mitigate risks.
  • Support local community development initiatives in areas such as education, health, and sustainable livelihoods.
  • Ensure transparent and effective communication between the company and community stakeholders.
  • Facilitate grievance resolution mechanisms to address community concerns in a fair and timely manner.

 QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 7-10 years of experience in environmental management within the mining or heavy industry.
  • Strong understanding   of radiation monitoring, environmental impact assessments, and environmental legislation.
  • Experience in environmental risk assessment and implementing control measures.
  • Knowledge of ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems.
  • Proficiency in environmental monitoring techniques and data analysis.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Experience working in uranium mining or other radiation-exposed environments is an advantage.
