JOB DESCRIPTION
Position : Depot Operator (2)
Department : Operations
Location : Chitedze LPG Depot, Lilongwe
Reports To : Depot Safety and Operations Officer
- Job Purpose
The Depot Operator is responsible for carrying out the day-to-day operational activities at the LPG depot including safe handling, storage, filling, and dispatch of LPG cylinders and bulk gas. The role ensures that all operations are conducted safely, efficiently, and in compliance with company procedures, safety regulations, and LPG industry standards.
- Key Responsibilities
LPG Handling and Filling Operations
- Operate LPG cylinder filling equipment and related machinery.
- Fill LPG cylinders according to prescribed weight and safety standards.
- Inspect cylinders before filling to ensure they are safe and suitable for use.
- Identify damaged, leaking, or expired cylinders and remove them from service.
- Monitor LPG pumps, compressors, valves, and gauges during operations.
LPG Storage and Stock Management
- Assist in receiving LPG from tanker trucks into bulk storage tanks.
- Monitor LPG storage tank levels and report discrepancies.
- Assist with stock counts of filled and empty cylinders.
- Ensure proper stacking and storage of LPG cylinders in designated areas.
Loading and Dispatch Operations
- Assist with loading and offloading LPG cylinders from delivery trucks.
- Verify delivery quantities against dispatch documentation.
- Ensure proper securing of cylinders during transport.
- Assist with preparation of LPG orders for dispatch.
Safety and Compliance
- Follow all depot safety procedures and LPG handling standards.
- Use Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at all times when required.
- Report unsafe conditions, gas leaks, or equipment faults immediately.
- Assist in emergency response during LPG incidents or fire emergencies.
- Participate in safety drills and toolbox talks.
Equipment Maintenance
- Conduct basic daily inspections of LPG filling equipment and tools.
- Report equipment faults or maintenance requirements to supervisors.
- Ensure operational areas and equipment are kept clean and orderly.
Housekeeping
- Maintain cleanliness of the filling plant, cylinder yard, and storage areas.
- Ensure clear access to fire fighting equipment and emergency exits.
- Dispose of waste materials in accordance with company procedures.
- Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
- Compliance with LPG safety procedures.
- Accuracy of cylinder filling operations.
- Zero safety incidents or operational violations.
- Proper handling and storage of LPG cylinders.
- Cleanliness and organization of operational areas.
- Qualifications and Experience
- Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE) or equivalent.
- Technical or vocational training is an added advantage.
- Minimum 1–3 years experience in industrial operations, fuel depots, gas handling, or logistics.
- Experience in LPG or petroleum operations is an added advantage.
- Skills and Competencies
- Basic understanding of LPG handling and safety procedures.
- Ability to follow operational procedures and safety instructions.
- Physical fitness for manual handling tasks.
- Good teamwork and communication skills.
- Attention to detail and safety awareness.
- Working Conditions
- Based at the LPG depot with exposure to outdoor and industrial environments.
- Requires use of PPE including safety boots, gloves, helmets, and protective clothing.
- Involves manual handling of LPG cylinders and equipment.
- May involve shift work depending on depot operations.
- Authority Levels
- Authority to stop operations if unsafe conditions are identified.
- Authority to report unsafe equipment or cylinders.
- Authority to escalate operational issues to the Depot Supervisor.
