Masters Finance Ltd is a newly established Deposit Taking Microfinance Institution committed to providing modern, inclusive, and technology-driven financial services to economically active Malawians. As we establish five branches and prepare for our transition into a commercial bank, we are strengthening our leadership team to ensure sound credit management and robust risk governance.
We therefore invite applications for a highly experienced and analytical Credit & Risk Manager to lead our credit operations and enterprise-wide risk management functions.
Position: Credit & Risk Manager
Location: Lilongwe, Malawi
Reports To: Head of Credit
Key Purpose of the Role
To provide strategic leadership for the credit and risk functions, ensuring high-quality loan portfolio growth, sound underwriting standards, effective risk controls, and compliance with Reserve Bank of Malawi (RBM) prudential guidelines. The role ensures that Masters Finance Ltd maintains a healthy credit book, strong risk culture, and sustained financial stability.
Key Responsibilities
1. Credit Operations Leadership
• Develop and implement credit policies, procedures, and risk-based lending frameworks.
• Oversee loan origination, assessment, approval, disbursement, monitoring, and recovery.
• Ensure consistent credit underwriting standards across all branches.
• Review high-risk or high-value loan applications and provide recommendations to the Credit Committee.
• Analyse portfolio trends, delinquency patterns, and credit performance.
2. Portfolio Management & Quality Control
• Monitor Portfolio at Risk (PAR), provisioning levels, and loan classification in line with RBM directives.
• Develop early warning systems and initiate corrective action on deteriorating accounts.
• Conduct branch-level credit audits and loan book health assessments.
• Lead recovery campaigns for delinquent accounts.
3. Enterprise Risk Management
• Develop and maintain a comprehensive enterprise risk management framework.
• Identify, assess, and monitor key risks across all departments (credit, operational, market, liquidity, ICT, compliance).
• Maintain an updated Risk Register and deliver periodic risk assessments.
• Coordinate stress testing and scenario analysis.
4. Regulatory Compliance & Reporting
• Ensure full compliance with RBM prudential guidelines, IFRS 9, AML/CFT, and internal policies.
• Prepare periodic credit and risk reports for Management and the Board Risk Committee.
• Support regulatory inspections and audits.
5. Leadership & Capacity Building
• Coach and support branch credit teams to enhance credit discipline and operational efficiency.
• Conduct training on credit analysis, risk awareness, AML/CFT, and loan monitoring.
• Promote a strong risk culture across the organisation
Qualifications & Experience
• Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, Banking, or related field.
• A professional certification (FRM, CRM, CPA, ACCA, CISA) is an added advantage.
• Minimum 5 years experience in risk management within financial services, banking, or microfinance.
• Strong understanding of RBM regulatory frameworks, IFRS 9, and enterprise risk practices.
• Demonstrated experience in credit analytics, operational risk, or compliance.
• Excellent analytical, communication, and report-writing skills.
• Minimum 5–7 years’ experience in credit management or risk management, preferably within banking or microfinance.
• Strong understanding of RBM prudential guidelines, credit methodologies, and risk frameworks.
• Hands-on experience in loan portfolio management and credit operations.
• Strong analytical, financial modelling, and reporting skills.
